Pilates hurt my knees???

I bought my first Pilates tape (Pilates weight loss for Dummies) and the first time I did it (ok the only time I did it) my knees were very sore (while doing it and directly after,,,not the next day like my thighs). There seemed to be a lot of twisting. Is this normal? Am I doing it wrong?

Sorry- I don't do pilates.....there's something about it I really don't enjoy- perhaps it's the breathing and co-ordination needed. Who knows, lol! BUT we do have some pilates people around here, hopefully they'll have some words of advice for you.
Best Wishes for 2005

i take pilates, and i can't imagine what kind of twisting you mean - as far as i can think, there is no twisting involving your knees in pilates. in any event pilates shouldn't hurt your knees, and you shouldn't do any exercise that hurts your knees like that. i'm not familiar with that video so i can't say whether it's the video or whether you weren't doing it right.

i highly recommend taking an actual class taught by

Although some exercises require bent knees, I don't know any that directly use the knees. The majority of the effort involved in a Pilates workout should come from the core abdominal muscles.

Most videos have one person doing a modified version of the exercise for beginners or people with back pain or tight muscles in the thighs.

I agree with the suggestion of taking a class. I really couldn't do that when I started because there were none in my area, but I found the first video from the Winsor Pilates series to be helpful with specific instruction as to posture and breathing.

Good luck to you. I really enjoy Pilates. I hope you can take a class or something and see what it's all about.

Thank you all for your help. It was the squatting and lunging exercises that hurt (all in standing position). It is a beginner tape.

I've done lunges and stuff as part of cardio boot camp stuff, but not as part of pilates, but there are many versions out there. Lunges can hurt one if they're not done correctly. I am still just getting used to doing lunges. Not fun.

Good Luck

i agree, i've never done exercises like those as part of pilates. when done in a boot camp class or other kind of group fitness class they do have to be done correctly in order to not injure the knees. the most important things are 1) to not bend your leg so that your knee goes out past your toe when doing a lunge or a squat, and 2) i don't know what kind of twisting motions you are doing, but you don't want to be twisting your lower leg and your upper leg in different directions or you'll torque your knee.

if it hurts you don't do those exercises
