Cardio Question

As you can probably tell from my name, I am dancing for my aerobics. (I'm also doing the Tammilee Webb weight and abs DVDs and I'm trying to get back into yoga, but so far no go.) I went to fitday.com to see how many calories I burn with my dance videos and it said something like 155 calories. That's all! I'm sweating like crazy afterwards. I can't stand the typical aerobics tapes. They bore me. I just can't believe all that moving around and I'm only burning 155 calories.

What types of things are the rest of you doing that is burning more calories? Maybe I should just up the time I spend with my dance videos. The problem is I'm already exercising for close to an hour (sometimes a little more) as it is. I've got too many things I need to tend to to spend much more than that. I've been thinking about getting up earlier in the mornings to do one tape and then do another in the evening time, which is my usual work out time. I can't seem to make myself get out of bed, though.

Frustrating!

I am no expert on this by any means. I'm sure others will have better info than I, however, not gonna stop me from putting my 2 cents in. ;o)

I think even though you may only be burning 155 it builds momentum for the rest of the day to burn more calories. Gets that metabolism going. So it probably would be good to do something in the morning but only if it's not gonna cause you more stress trying to fit it in. Wouldn't be worth that.

Several people are doing 8 minutes in the morning here. They do like 8 minutes to boost their metabolism at least I think that's what the line of thinking is.

That would be me, Ginger, the 8 Minutes in the Morning gal. I'd suggest reading the book, of course, but in a nut shell, here's what Jorge says. Weight lifting is how you build muscle which is the ONLY thing that can burn fat. He suggests adding aerobics for only 20 minutes extra as an added boost to your metabolism, plus it cleans out your arteries. Basically, metabolism isn't an all-in-all fat burner or weight loss regimine (sp?). As muscle grows, it can burn more fat. The fat reserves we're wanting to use as energy (be burned up) has to move into the muscle before it can be burned. That's why you want to focus on lifting even light weights that are a bit challenging in order to burn the fat, loose inches and change the shape of your body. My testimony that this works: I lost 1 pound the first week, 1/2 pound the second week, and weighed yesterday and had lost another 2 pounds! No starving, no dizziness, no time away from the family! Not only does Jorge say that 1-2 pounds a week is normal, I've read numerous publications that agree (it's not a fad or such). Anything promising to loose more is unhealthy. You're either loosing water weight or muscle. If you're loosing muscle, you are guaranteed to gain back the weight and usually a bit extra because the metabolism boosting, fat burning muscle has been lost. And don't think about starving yourself either because if you don't eat every three hours, your body goes into "starvation mode" and starts feeding from the muscle first! Bad idea. You can read more of what I've written in the General Discussion area for 8 Minutes in the Morning, plus some other folders I've contributed to.
Hope this helps!

Yvonne, pretty recently we had a discussion on this very aspect of fitday.com (not sure what the thread name was....I'm pretty sure Miranda will know )

I tend to agree with either Ginger or Gretchen (can't remember who said it- see -I've a mind like a sieve!!) about working out in the morning and building momentum for the day ahead.

I'm sure your dancing is doing a lot more for you than you may think. Keep up the good work!

Also, calories burned is variable for each person, depending on their weight. I think the calories seem a little low on Fitday from what you are describing. One of the Firm founders says you need to burn at least 200 calories for it to be a "workout." I heard that *typically* the Firm tapes burn around 300 calories. You could use that as a gauge for your tapes.

I have found fitday to be great when calculating calories in food, but to be very inaccurate on calculating caloric expenditure. Try some of the others:
http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.html
http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc
http://www.shape.com/tools/calc/burned/

Just a few I use, if I don't like what one is saying....LOL!

I didn't expect to get so many great responses. Thanks so much to each of you for your input. I'll be checking out the previous thread about 8 Minutes in the Morning. I've always been curious about it, but since I have a weight routine in the evenings that I like I decided not to look into it any further. I'll check it out now, though.
