BUT Gretchen, you have to be very careful about what you're eating - even if it's just salads.
I read in Fitness mag that the Wendy's mandarin chicken salad was acceptable, but the local TV news was not so favorable. The main offense with that salad is that they give you way too much dressing and a lot of people poor the whole thing on. Fitness mag also suggested using the almonds for good fats but not using the krispy noodles.
I like the Arby's Martha's Vineyard salad; it has cheese on it though. The good things about it are, fresh apples, dried cranberry, white meat chicken that's not fried and a raspberry dressing, which keeps me from using too much because I'm not a huge fan of raspberry, just a bit to add a little moisture and extra flavor.
Gretchen I posted most of the text from the article in our article section and it does rate a whole bunch of salads, but if you look at the link it provides very detailed info on loads of different fast food salads.
Well that sucks! lol
Subway's doesn't look too bad but they don't have drive throughs here. Maybe I'll have to look more into packing lunch.
Gretchen
Doing your own lunch isn't bad. It saves money, and you can control better where the calories come from. My DBF and I work together so we do that. We shop together a lot for the lunch stuff, lots of baby carrots and apples and very grainy breads and stuff like that. It's not bad at all.

I make my own salads too. We have a small refridgerator at work that I keep prewashed/prebagged lettuce or baby spinach in, plus salad dressings from the health food store. I've bought the sample size dressings first to see which ones I like before committing to a full size bottle. I also get the deli to slice me thick slices of ck to crumble on top. It's delicious and it fills me up for at least three hours. I haven't liked any fast food's salads so far. I do like Outback's and Red Lobster's Caesar salads. It's not fast food but you can call ahead and request that they keep the dressing seperate. The traditional preparation for a Caesar is to rub the leaves in the dressing, but it's always too much so I dip my fork into the dressing (on the side), poke the leaves with the fork then using my lips to drag off the smaller amount of dressing from the fork.
I also read the same thing some of the other's were mentioning about the Wendy's mandarin salad having 200 more calories than Jarod's Subway sandwich including meat and cheese! Wow what an eye opener!
Happy eating!

-can't vote on this one Gretchen. The variety of 'fast food' places here is slim (good) and I don't go to them often- and when I do, it's not for a salad (bad!). I was so craving McD's last week--- but luckily the line was too long and I didn't have the patience!!

When I am doing Slim Fast for two meals, I can afford some things like the wendy's salad. I had a profile thing done once and I was under my calories for the day sometimes. That surprised me!
I usually do eat things from home though. That way, I know what's in it. I do use bags of salad though, the dark green variety and bags of spinach leaves. It's easier here in MI in the winter. BUT, near the end of summer, a time I've come to live for, we can go to Block's and get fresh-everything! It's great. And the prices are so good too. we can actually afford green and red bell peppers, which are outrageous in the grocery stores here.
I should look into canning or something so I can have Block's produce all year.
