New and determined - sort of.....

Hi, today is the first day I have seen this board. I was over on the October 2004 Expecting - I had a baby boy on Oct. 12th who weighed in at 9lbs 14oz. I lost 36 lbs in the first 3 weeks, unfortunately I had gained 50 lbs. I was 25 lbs overweight to begin with and now I seem to be on a downward spiral (I gained 6 1/2 lbs in one week!!). I am absolutely determined to lose weight, Ben was child # 2 for me and I want him and my daughter (Miranda) to grow up with healthy eating habits. The problem is moments like right now when I want cookies, chips, brownies, anything really, so bad that I can barely stand it; and unfortunately I usually give in. I am sitting here drinking water and typing hoping this insane desire will go away. I honestly feel like an addict. I want to have the energy to go play with my kids, not be embarrased to be in a swimsuit at the pool with them. My husband is great, he has even told me when I reach my goal weight I can go out and buy a brand new wardrobe. So, ladies I need your HELP!!! I am 5'10" so I am going for a goal weight of 160lbs. 42.5 lbs less than I was this morning. I am currently in a size 16, I want to be in a size 12.

Anyone know a "realistic" goal time - I would like to think I can do this in 5 or 6 months but is that being honest with myself?

Lisa,

First of all welcome! I have only been here myself for a short amount of time but I can guarantee you that these women here will give you all kinds of support, friendship, and advice. This is a great place to be!

Experts say that a healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. So looking at it that way, your goal of 42 pounds in 6 months is very healthy. However, I would try not to put yourself on a schedule like that. I have done that and then when I messed up or didn't achieve what I had "planned", I would get upset and the only thing that would make me feel better was a brownie or two or five. Also something to keep in mind is that it is easier to keep the weight off if you do it gradually. You don't become susceptible to short term solutions and work more towards a healthy lifestyle.

I try to give myself daily/weekly goals. It is so much more achievable.

Lisa, welcome. We're here for you, girl.
I agree with last post that 1 or 2 pounds a week is healthy. It allows your body and skin to adjust so you're not saggy and retain your muscle to burn fat. Find a program that works for you. I've bought so many books and never finished them, so I stop buying books and started checking them out from the library to see if it'd be right for me. I found "8 minutes in the Morning" to work well for my schedule. If it's too complicated, you probably won't do it. Also, don't feel like you're in a race with this either. It puts too much pressure on yourself which just causes more weight gain. I love the saying that "you eat an elephant one bite at a time". If we didn't gain the weight overnight, it won't be overnight that we loose it. Have a plan and walk it out one day at a time.
Plan your meals and shop accordingly. Prepare foods for easy access so the cookies and chips aren't easier to grab in a hurry. Healthy eating takes effort but it's worht it.

Best wishes,
Ginger

Hi Lisa! I am a mom too. I have 3 kids. My youngest is 18 months. I let things get out of control a few months before I got pregnant with my last one. I quickly gained 20 pounds...then while pregnant I gained 40...after he was born I settled in at 149. I lost about ten pounds and then put 5 back on. So I was at 143 two weeks ago when I started really trying to lose weight. That was when I looked at calorie amounts of foods and added up what my "bad days" totaled to. It was close to 4000 calories a day! I would have days like those about once a week...sometimes more. It had been a crazy year for me...lots going on. Anyway, I just wanted to welcome you. :) I'm on a 1500 calorie a day diet. I plan to eat pretty much the same way the rest of my life...by being concious of the amount of food my body needs to maintian my goal weight. No more binge-days for me. I haven't missed them either. Oh, and you said you want to wear a swimsuit. That is a goal for me too....we are taking a beach vacation trip in July. I want to be ready. :)

I hope to see you post your progress! :)
