My power supply is bad. It keeps shutting of my computer. It's 5 years old. Does anyone have any recommendations? Should I replace the power supply (100 dollars) or get a new computer. This thing only cost me 600 5 years ago.

TIA,
Kim

Hey Kim, we replaced a couple of power supplies at work for the exact same reason.

Investing into a new power supply isn't worth it. You are lucky that your comp lasted that long. A lot of the parts inside a computer have an average life expectancy below 5 years.

Go to one of our main computer chains like CompUSA or so and check for refurbished models. Make sure to explain to the salesperson what you are using your machine for. If you mainly do internet, email, and some photo stuff, one of the low-end machines should be fine. :) You should expect to invest USD 250 - 350.

Hope this helps!

Thank you all for your advice! I really appreciate it. I don't know a lot about computers at all. This is our first one. So it looks like we will buy a new one, and keep our monitor so that we save a little...even though those flat screen ones look really neat! lol. I didn't realize a computer wouldn't just last for 20 years! So four years from now we will start expecting to replace it again I guess. But it's worth it. :) Thanks again. It was very helpful.
