White bread vs. Wheat bread

I checked at the store. White bread and wheat bread had the same calories per serving, same fat grams and same carb grams. So why is wheat better?

Wheat bread will have a higher fibre content, and will take your body longer to process into sugar.
True, true, Miranda.
Also realize there's a big difference between wheat and whole wheat. Wheat is still mostly white bread that has wheat added in with the addition of brown sugar to make it a "wheat" color. Whole wheat is brown naturally because of it keeping the outer husk, the fiber part, that causes it to digest more slowly. This slow digestion is what "moves things along" and keeps insulin levels low which helps reduce fat accumulation due to high levels of sugar in the blood stream.

Make sure the wheat bread you are looking at it's first ingredient is whole wheat flour, if it isn't then the wheat bread you are looking at has a mix of white and whole wheat flour. Whole wheat is normally higher in fiber and takes longer to break down, while white flour quickly turns into sugar (the insulin factor)...so if you are someone that has insulin resistance (much like myself I have PCOS) you need something that takes longer to break down in the system.
But if you don't have issues with carbs, I get very bloated when I eat too many carbs...then it shouldn't matter really.
Everyone had great input on that question. If you are interested, I also wanted to say that there is a website that talks about all the really great health benefits of whole wheat. It's where I learned a lot a few years back when we made the switch. It's www.breadbeckers.com . And just look for the information on why wheat is better. :)
