Anyone have more than 100 to lose?
| Thu, 02-10-2005 - 12:46pm |
Hello,
I am new here. I have more than 200 pounds to lose and was wondering if there was anyone here with that much of a challenge in front of them as well? I was hoping for some support. I don't get a lot from my family and it's hard. I have been dieting for about 4 weeks now but don't have a scale so I don't know if I've lost anything but have noticed a small difference in my clothes. My husband doesn't want me to buy a scale because he thinks I will get discouraged but I think I need to know... any advice?
Thanks in advance.
Amber

Babycakes, I GOT YOUR BACK!!!!
I've lost #162 and have 47 more to go. I will more than happily be your cheering squad and 'tipster'. I've been where you are... I 'lived' in the 150 range and, after years of steriods for a med. condition (prednisone) I lost my mind AND went up to 360+ pounds. Took a few years to get it off (once I made up my mind to do it and went AMA and got off the meds) but I did it... and I'm doing the last 'few' pounds daily.
I'm all about the 'massive transformation' and I'll be more than happy to reach out to you if you'll allow me to do that.... you decide.
Just be rest assured, it CAN be done. It's NOT easy but it's NOT murderous either. It's a SLOW process. But golly, it feels good to throw away the 'big' clothes on a semi-weekly basis.
One initial word of advice. Don't buy a scale. Weigh yourself to get your initial weight. DON'T SHARE WITH YOUR FAMILY (save your dignity for now). Only weigh yourself monthly at this point. You may/may not see a drop in weight at first but your first month goal is to get your mindset to the point where you are acknowledging that everything that goes pass your lips is a help/hinderance towards the rest of your life. Period. And each time you walk, move 'just because', is an investment into your emotional and physical account. You deserve to have a HUGE account of goodness and health... both physically and mentally. Get yourself to THAT mental point and then we can work on the 'steps' to getting you there.
It's scary, no one will ever claim a change this big isn't... but it's a good, refreshing, life-affirming scary... one from which to grow from... not shy away from.
If you want it, it's yours... and I'll help if you'd like.
Excitedly awaiting your reply,
Lynn
Amber, I just wanted to say that we would all love to encourage you in this adventure. I had 40 to lose, now it's 29, so I have not been in your exact situation, but we can all help each other out. It sounds like your husband is supportive! That's really great. :) If you are noticing changes, that is really super! What kind of diet chanegs have you made to lose so far? I would love to hear and will love to keep up with your progress! You deserve to do this for yourself!

Amber, welcome to the board!!!!
Welcome to the 30's board!! And congratulations on making this life altering decision to lose weight.
Lynn has given some wonderful words of advice. I agree with her on the scales and weighing-in strategy (for now at least).
You are extremely welcome to stick around on our board (I'm not sure what the majority of posters here wish to lose {I'll post a poll later}) but I wanted to let you know about another really supportive board here in iVillage.
It's the 100lbs or more to lose board-- the ladies there are very welcoming:

Let me explain my 'weighing in strategy' for the first month. It just doesn't matter if/how much you lose til your head is in the place to keep it going. By not 'living for the #'s' the first month, you're free to commit your head to the process and what it's going to take to sustain it. Too many times I tried to lose weight and lived by the scale... didn't work. I got mad when it didn't go fast enough... and by golly I quit. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm... wonder where that lead...lol.
I think a weekly weigh in (down the road) is beneficial but please, only weigh a the dr's, the gym or someplace that doesn't 'guilt you/frustrate you/mock you' from your bathroom. You'll know with your clothes and your energy and the #'s will take care of themselves ...
Peace.
Lynn
Thank you so much ladies for the much needed advice and warm welcome. Lynn, I am so glad that someone has walked this path before me and can help me along the way.
My husband is supportive for the most part. He is very overweight too and really needs to lose weihgt but is in denial still and we are just dealing with that for right now...
I will stick with not weighing myself for right now. That seems to be what works best and use the clothes test as my gauge.
Someone asked what I am doing so far... I go to the gym when I can force myself to face all the cute people. I still feel really intimidated and don't know how to handle that. I also eat less than 1500 calories a day. I have cut out sugar completely which was very hard because I have such a sweet tooth but I have not cheated thus far and it's been about a month of this....
I'll let you know my progress!! Thanks again everyone.
Amber
Welcome sweetie...
First, I heard volumes with your, "face all the cute people" comment. Try and 'hear' what I'm about to say. When I first joined the gym (at a size 24) I was freaked out but 'them' too. But, my gym requires at least 1 initial meeting with a personal trainer (free with membership) so you can get a good baseline and learn how to use the computerized machines. Well, my trainer turned out to be a saint. When I said that I had already lost #129 by diet/exercise and RX modification, but still felt self-conscious because of how much further I had to go... she said, 'don't even THINK about that... there are a lot of people in here who used to weigh 400+ and all had gastric bypass... we've not had many who did it the old fashioned way. Most of these 'cute folks' used to be really heavy... no one will jeer... they will ONLY be thankful to see you come... for the first week... then you'll be a 'cute person' (regardless of size) for the next group". Totally made sense. I say, make yourself go 3x a week. Become a regular. The cute people weren't always cute and those that are snotty will get old and wrinkled too...lol.
Good for you on your 1,500 calorie limit... BUT don't become so concerned with the calories that you take the point out of food... as fuel to keep the engine running. Load up on things that keep your running well, not what meets your calorie requirements but not your nutritional requirements... I'm all for moderation but not for giving up quality for quantity.
Amen to the 'scales' thing ;o)
"Sweet Suggestions": sugar free/fat free instant jello pudding (amen to dairy); chocolate peanut butter Zone bars for lunch (think PB cups with protein); crystal light (walmart makes a decent knock off for cheap0; sugar free popsicles (by the gallon...lol); Rocky Mountain chocolate factor Peanut Butter cups (to die for); Russell Stover sugar free Jelly beans... there are a lot of 'products' that you can eat with no sugar (or very low). Don't go nuts with them (they still have calories) but they hit the spot in a pinch (in moderation) and don't leave you with a sugar crash (I'm hypoglaucemic... had years of dealing with sugar issues). Work in 100-200 calories a day with sugar free sweets and you'll be feeling like the Queen of the World as your fanny melts out of your britches and the chocolate melts in your mouth.
Don't work on your husband... most people respond with anger (eventually) and will interfer with YOUR goal... when he's ready, he'll come running after your shapely bod and let you know... be ready... will happen... when HE'S ready.
Hope this was sorta, somewhat, kindof, maybe useful.
Lynn
