Mountain Bike Race: 12 Miles of Hell

So I need a little accountability...
My first big bike race of the season is coming up on March 6, 2005.

Wow, how exciting. I use to live in Lawton, OK and believe I've climbed up that very mountain in the picture. I can't remember for sure but think it's called Mt. Scott.
So do you know a lot about biking? This is something I'd like to give a try but I'm unsure of where to begin. Don't even know what bike would be best. It's something I'd like to give a try for a bit before I invest too much money on bikes etc.
I'm sure if you stick to your goals it will make the race more endurable to say the least. A lot of hard work but the feeling of accomplishment will be awesome.

I wouldn't say I know a lot about biking.. but at least enough to get started.

Wow, Paula!
Paula that race looks wicked (wicked good AND wicked bad).
I live in Wyoming now. Very hilly!
Do you think for a first bike, to give things a try, would Target or Wal-mart work? They have brands like Huffy, Schwin, Mongoose. I would start out with a road type bike. I'm not in the best shape at this point and time so I'd like to get where I go for fairly long distances. Mountain biking does sound like fun but don't think I'm that sure of myself at this point.
I did look a little and we have like two sporting good stores listed under "Bicycles". We also have a few other sporting good stores that may or may not carry bikes.

Yes, I think getting on ANY bike and getting started is a good idea.

Paula-
That looks so awesome!
My SO and I are really into mountain biking. He has been doing it for years and I have really only been participating for the last two years. I love it though. VERY exhilerating. We live in Michigan though so we can really only do it about 6 months of the year, but during those 6 months we mountain bike at least 3-4 days a week. I am always in such better shape during those summer months and I miss it so much when the season ends. We went down to Tennessee this fall and did some pretty amazing trails there.
I invested in a road bike around August of last year with the intentions that I would be able to do that longer than I could mountain bike but I don't get quite the same kick out of road biking as I do mountain biking.
Also-to everyone-Paula mentioned >Your butt will hurt a lot at first.
WoW Paula-- that is some bike ride you're about to embark on. Good Luck and congratulations for making such a commitment! This is a wonderful board for support- I'm not sure if there are many bikers among us....but the support and encouragement will flow!!
We'll keep you accountable ;-)
Looking forward to hearing all about your training and posting with you-
