Just Getting Started! NEED HELP!

Hello everyone! This is my very first discussion board posting. I just joined iVillage this evening after being directed here by my instructor. I am 35 years old, work full-time, have a new husband (May 2004), an eleven year old son, two step-children (4 and 7 years old), have just returned to college full-time, and NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT! I have battled my weight my entire life. I am taking a Nutrition course this semester and we had an orientation last evening where I learned that my percentage of body fat is 35% (which puts me in the obese catagory) and I am carrying around 61 pounds of body fat. I am 5'6" and currently weight 173 lbs. I want to lose weight so badly but cannot seem to get started on a path of healthy eating and exercise. Hoping to get the suggestions and encouragement I need on this board to assist me in changing my lifestyle. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I would love to lose 30 pounds by the end of May. Is this realistic. My all time highest weight was 198 and my all time low was 137. I am tired of the rollercoaster.

Hi and welcome! I have 30 pounds to lose too. If I stay on track, I can lose it by the end of May, but my goal date is really July 15th...when we are going on a beach vacation. I have been dieting (with permanent changes understood) for about 3 weeks now. My first two weeks I lost a total of 9 pounds...water mostly I guess. I count calories. I'm 5 feet tall and so I eat 1500 a day (that's an extra 250 for nursing). I hope to see you post more and will look forward to your progress. :)

You'll find there is lots of support from wonderful women in the same boat here. As Miranda said we are starting a challenge tomorrow. I hope you'll be able to join us in it.

Reading your story sounds like my life story almost. I will soon be turning 32 years old and have three children. I too have struggled with my weight forever. I used to be so busy with my own activities and sports, but now find myself running all of the time for my children and husband. I do take some time for myself, but not enough. I also work 40 hours per week as an alcohol and drug therapist, which requires no physical activity. Good for you to be going back to school and congrats on your marriage. Your words have inspired me today and reminded me that there are others out there with the same kind of issues I have. Thanks again and I hope to hear from you soon!!!
