Intro / Marathon Training?

First off, I guess I should introduce/re-introduce myself. I've posted maybe twice here and have been away - working too many hours!!!!! My job can sometimes be extremely stressful. I work at a Clinical Research Organization (CRO) - we provide services for pharmaceutical companies to run clinical trials.
I have an 8 month old boy - Alex - who is just the best baby anyone could ever ask for and a wonderful husband who I've known for 13 years, married to for 5 and a half.
I guess I was in OK shape for someone who is 5 feet tall

Welcome Janae...
Was the group Team in Training??? They are the major training fundraising group of this type and their main focus is Marathon training. They do however do have a Triathlon training off shoot now as well. All fundraising goes to Lukemia research.
Anywho, They seem to have the best trainers and most everyone I've talked to have had a postitive experience with that side of it. The hardest part seems to be meeting their funding goals in order to participate. BUT i wouldnt' let that stop me. :o)
There is a great running site (www.coolrunning.com) that has a couch to 5k plan that is great for when you don't know where to start at all. They also have a really good running log available for free to keep up with your distances and speeds. I started just over 2 years ago taking my life and body back into my control and the way I did it was setting a goal of doing an olympic triathlon in June. So don't let anyone tell you it's not possible. 2 years later I'm still doing triathlons and I'm contemplating doing a 1/2 Ironman next year. GOOD LUCK.
Remember on this particular journey there is no way to loose. Even if you only run the one marathon you will learn discipline and something very valuable about yourself. That you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

Welcome!!
Thanks Sabrina!
Yes - this was the Team in Training group that I heard about and then looked them up on the web. I requested info, but haven't received it yet. I think they have several options for you to do - triathlons, marathons, and bike...um...runs (whatever they're called :)
If I thought there was a chance that I'd be able to do it (not sure if there's an application that you have to be approved, etc), then I would be burning rubber trying to get companies/neighbors/strangers to donate.
I just signed up on the coolrunning website, so it looks interesting so far.
I'm so impressed that you are able to triathlons! Were you fit before you started training for them? How long before you were able to
Thanks Miranda!
Hmmm...that would be a great excuse to go to Bermuda. I looked at the link you posted - gorgeous!!!! That in itself would be incentive enough to be able to do a marathon! Maybe that will be my reward...
:)
Janae...
You are welcome to the information. From my experience you don't have to jump through any hoops to join the team, if your area has an active Team in training group. They should notify you fairly quickly with information on the next meeting and especially for marathoners the training is fantastic and you will have a coach available to help. :o) Not to mention most people who do it are trying to run a marathon so there will be lots of support in that area. I'm a horrible fund raiser. That doesn't mean I don't want to that means I'm not good at asking people for money. I just clam up. Offically I'm supposed to be raising money for www.ironwishes.org. THey are an offical division of the Make a Wish foundation for Triathletes. You can even find my bio and pic on the site. However I have become more of a spokesperson then a fundraiser.
Barring that the biggest thing I would tell you to do is try to get out atleast 5 times a week for no less then 20 mins... no more then 30 to start if you've never been active before just run when you can... for as long as you can. Mailbox to mailbox and walk the rest of the time. As you get more used to running it will get easier and you will find yourself running to every second mailbox... every third and eventually a mile at a time. And atleast you are doing some training while you are waiting for TNT to call you for the first meeting. IF you haven't already I would also strongly suggest going to Fleet Feet Sports or some other running specialty shop and having them put you on their treadmill and analyze your stride. Then buy a good pair of running shoes. You can prevent so many injuries and shin splints if you just invest 80 or so bucks in the right shoe.
O and there is no need to be impressed. LOL I just got fed up with sitting around the house. I was never what you would call athletic although I was a gym rat in College and for a few years after... doing circuit training and trim and tone classes. But I never ever ran until Jan 2003. By the end of Feb I was running 5 miles and bored to death so spiced it up with some biking in March. By March I had the crazy idea of doing a Triathlon because I had no more weight to loose and thus the motivation was wanning. I started swimming in May and did my first ever Triathlon an olympic distance near the end of June. I usually only do one or two races a year but I train hard all season and take only a small break once a year around the holidays. Which means I workout doing whatever I feel like doing during the week and don't keep a real schedule. In another year I think I want to do a 1/2 but We'll see how this season goes. BTW, My first race I finished last and last year I was in the top of the BACK! LOL improvement yes but I'm still slow and I still get out there and enjoy myself. The upside, I look great, feel great... and my kids and husband think I'm a stud no matter where I finsih.

Yes, I actually trained with Team In Training a little over a year ago for the Orlando triathlon. I raised part of the money, but ended up getting into a car accident and could not work out for 8 weeks. But I actually have been thinking about doing it again.
