I've used one off and on for a year and a half. Depending on where I'm at during training. They are great for keeping an eye on your "fitness to train". If you know your standard heart rate any variation 5-10 pts over or under can be a red flag for a rest day.... OR if you go slow and keep your heartrate aerobic you can train your heart to handle more distance and slowly as a result you will also get faster.
As for models... I've only heard good things about the Polar, and will probably be replacing my Timex with one in the next month. The Timex heart rate monitor I have used all along as started to "burn" my skin. ON two different occassions I have had a flat rash the exact shape of the heart rate monitor. It was painful and hard to get rid of. I asked around and I found out that TIMEX has this problem with some of it's strap models. For specific training ...there are tons of resources on the web.
My mom uses one, I'll find out.

I'm thinking of getting one too.
