Hello,

I have been a member of ivillage for sometime now but being too much of an introvert was hesitant in participating on a message board.Well here is my first step to being serious about my goal and that is to accept that I need help...from you ladies...

I have just set my goal of getting into a running/walking routine and was hoping for support and guidance. My problem is that I can't stick to whatever I try...but after reading the various nice friendly and encouraging msgs I have a feeling I might just be able to do it with your support. Is there anyone here who is just starting on some kind of a running routine?

Hoping to hear back from someone.

Dee

There are a few of us here who do use walking as a way to exercise, we also have some gym gals, and even some triathletes.....

Good Luck, and looking forward to posting with you~

Welcome, I'm glad you decided to post with us.

Althought I have had an exercise routine for several years, and I've been a martial arts student for four years now, I too am just starting the walk/run thing. I signed up for my first 5K, a women's only run/walk in May.

I've been able to really start training this week. It has been so cold and nasty here in MI that I haven't had a chance to get out on a regular basis. But this week, I'm house sitting and have a nice treadmill available. I've done two sessions so far, and am determined to get one in tonight despite a social obligation.

I am excited about becoming a runner, but I know it will take some effort as well. I think that in the end the effort will pay off, we'll be happy with the results. The advice I have gotten from people on the boards here, and from a runner in my Hap Ki Do class, is to start slowly to prevent injury and burn out. Sounds good to me.

What I really want to know is, are those special running clothes really necessary. I got a link from a poster on iVillage to Runner's World mag site, and people there say that runners really need that "technical" fabric that controls moisture. I might get one shirt to see.

I never thought I could be a runner, but I decided to give it a shot. I am glad you are trying it as well. The ladies on this board are indeed very informative and motivating and just fun.

Hi,

Thank you islandgirl for the welcome note...and hkdredbelt you just re-affirmed my feeling that I did the right thing in joining this message board...I am already feeling geared up to stick to my running ...Unlike you I have never had a fixed exercise routine but have started visiting the gym and running since the last two weeks ..now when I say running I mean at short intervals in between my walking since I still am not upto the running non stop for more than 2 minutes..I am hoping that slowly I will build my stamina and get to a place where I will be walking in between the running and then all the way running ..instead of the way it is right now :).

hkdredbelt I am impressed with your dedication to fitness ...I hope we can keep pushing each other to better ourselves (I am sure its me who needs it more than you :)..I am lucky that i am in Florida and so no excuse of bad weather for me..also have a treadmill at home even if it does rain ...

thank you for the replies ladies :)

Hey how r u?..Really nice name :) Thanks for replying to my post. Its been a long time since I have been at home and not working and so decided to make best use of the time by getting fit and I have heard/read and seen that running is one of the best options to get my stamina and also to loose some inches. I run(more like walk and try running) on the treadmill and have started keeping track of my miles and calories spend ..I think it helps to see that I am doing something and I know if I have a workout partner even if online it will keep me motivated. So are you planning on walking regularly now?

Hi Dee! I just joined this board last week. I use to run an hour a day twice a day when I was child-less. With each child I had I was put on bed rest then I had a c-section with each. They don't recommend strenous excersise for at least 6mo after a c-section. So each time it was like losing my metabolism and muscle tone with each child. After my first child I was able to get back down to 125. With the second child I have gotton down to 150 (my youngest is 16 mo). I am the biggest I have ever been. I have been working on an eliptical machine and walking. I got serious about diet last fall when my son was a little older and there was more time to spend cooking etc. We got out of that post-baby convenience food stage! I have only been working out for about 3 weeks now. So you will have plenty of company in the walking-jogging arena. I am hoping I can get back down to 125 again. I keep telling myself that I did it once I can do it again!

sunny.hunny...hour a day twice a day sounds great I have only been doing 30-45 minutes and that too some days I miss it.So will you be getting back to hour a day twice a day again? Do you use a treadmill? What speed do you do?
I am impressed that with kids you are good at taking care of yourself and here I have no kids but am still in real bad shape...I am not worried as much by weight but its the lack of stamina that bothers me..I am 130 rightnow and was hoping that by running I could not only increase my stamina but perhasp get back to 125 the weight I feel is right for me :)...so looks like we have the same weight goal...

Actually I am in the same position. I always try to "psych" myself up for....Ok I am going to walk on the treadmill or run during my lunch break... but something always comes up and I end up eating my lunch at my desk. Mind you we have a FREE gym on premises at my place of employment. I really just want to be healthier and feel better. I am 35 and soon hoping to try to have a baby. I would just like to make my body healthier before I become pregnant.

Good luck!

Hey Sonya
You gave me deja-vu ..seriously I had the same problem I had been working(a desk job with absolutely no physical work)) eversince I finished college and my last employer had a free Gym but like you , how ever much I decided that I want to get into a fitness routine I just couldnt stick to it...I would eat at my desk and then come home and be so tired of my whole work day that I felt I deserved to just sit back and relax instead of hop on a treadmill. I tried motivating myself by saying ..hey I needed to be fit before I conceive(I too wanted to get fit before getting pregnant) but that did not help either. We have been trying for more than a year now with no results and then I had to quit my job to be with my husband(that wud help in getting pregnant right:)
So am at home but still no news of a baby..anyway after brooding over it for a few weeks I have given my self a hard talking to...I feel it will never work if I keep looking for external reasons to get fit ... I told myself I need to get fit bcoz that is what my body needs and bcoz it will be somethign I am doing for myself and it will make me happy and keep me in a shape to enjoy life ....not bcoz I need to loose weight or not bcoz I need to get pregnant..well that was about a month back and I did get into running/walking regularly..even doing some weights..

and when I saw myself faltering alittle I joined this msg board...to see how everyone else is sticking to their routine and to be inspired and keep me motivated..I realized I am the kind who needs to be part of a workout group(kind of be answerable to someone) to stick to a routine and so was looking for one online :)..care to join me in setting solid targets and making sure we stick to it? Maybe we can help each other here.

Good for you on the treadmill ~ it really is a good use of time

I plan to start walking more regularly, but for the next 6 weeks ~ I probably won't be getting into it as there is a much bigger goal at hand.
