Computer healed; and I'm back!

Hi Ladies, well that was one l-o-n-g week without a computer! I'm still not really quite sure what happened. Last Monday I was doing some 'spring cleaning' on the thing, including a thorough scan disk..... well after I finished doing all of that I went to log on, and couldn't!! So, shut down the computer and restarted- when I did that Windows would start up, but nothing appeared on the desk top. Then on Tuesday the computer that I use in the library did pretty much the same thing, weird!

So I couldn't even check in from time to time last week from school.
I missed you all :-(

One of our computer whiz teachers said he'd look at the computer tomorrow (I've been on Spring Break since last Wednesday). But the other night I was out with Bunny and he told me about the 'reset' button on the bottom of my laptop. I forgot that he told me about it, but he reminded me yesterday. To be honest I was skeptical.....

This morning when I woke up I took out the manual I have for the computer and searched through it about this 'reset' button = nothing! But thought.....well what have I got to loose?

Low and behold- it worked!!!

Obviously I have missed a load of new posts, questions, newcomers, etc....I will do my best to get through them all, but please understand if I don't post to them all ;-)

It's good to be back- hope you all have a wonderful Easter

IG, so glad that you are back :) Don't you hate computer problems? Something very similar to that happened to me a few years back. I wish I knew more about these things...so I am not totally lost when something goes wrong! lol

Welcome, back IG! I thought I had the same problem last night, which the Norton's and Lavasoft couldn't fix. However, a couple of resets and I was good to go again. Go figure! It is sad that a machine is more intelligent than we!

I'm off to hang laundry on the line after I post. Have a wonderful day!

Well, I feel like I've caught up here now- and hey it only took me close to two hours....not so bad! I really have missed posting here and seeing what everyone was up to. I was at a total loss for what to do, especially first thing in the morning; this place is like caffeine- I need my morning fix, lol!

Good to be back :-)

You know Caryn- I didn't know about the reset button. Never heard it mentioned before, anywhere! Anyone know exactly what it is? Or what it does? (It's a pretty cool little button to know about, lol)

The reset button on a desktop computer actually does the same thing as turning the power off and on. The advantage is that it won't turn off the power of all the attached stuff like printer, monitor, modem,... On a laptop it must do something like "disconnnecting and reconnecting" the battery. It comes in handy if your comp is completely hanging and the usual reboot with crtl alt del no longer works. Some times your laptop gets so frozen that you can't turn it off anymore. If the reset button doesn't help you will have to let your battery drain completely until no power is left. Then the laptop if finally completely off and you can charge the battery again and get it to boot up...

Hope this made sense :)

Thanks Monika! I really had never heard of the "magic" button before. I had planned on taking the computer with me to school today to have the computer 'whiz' teacher look at it. When I met him this morning I asked him about it. Basically he said the same thing as you, and added that let's say some sort of ~virus~ was there the reset button sets the computer back to where it was before the problem arose! Good thing, as it was driving me crazy not being able to turn it on!

You comment re. the battery made complete sense to me....didn't even think of that! But when I did push the reset button the battery light was orange (ie. charging). And to think I could have done all of this last week!!
