What time of day do you all find it best to work out?

As far as the eating question goes, I too am working on the smaller meals thing. I tend to get hungry at night, around bed time, 10-11 o'clock. And if I wake up in the night, I am so hungry sometimes. I can usually go back to sleep then though. I hope someone has some suggestions for better satisfying our needs in that area.

I like to work out in the evening. I always have. I guess it sort of started in college when I would meet friends to go out and walk on the track. I met one friend almost every Tuesday and Thursday one spring semester to swim. It would be about 8:00 p.m. before we met, after we had done some studying/writing at the library.

I do my workouts after work (unless I have something in the evening that causes me to need to get up early and do it). I seem to have some energy built up from the stress of the workday that I can put to good use. My HKD classes are from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday night ( 3 p.m. on Saturday). I haven't had any difficulty sleeping after doing evening workouts.

I can understand not wanting to be at the gym when it's crowded though. I am either at class or outside to walk/run. If the weather is bad I do cardio on DVD. I also do my weights and Pilates at home.

If I keep up the walk/run thing after the 5K in May, which I need to, I might have to look into doing that part of my workout in the morning as it gets hotter here.

I hope you find a time that works for you. Work, need for sleep, and life in general can make it tough.

I guess I'm still trying to figure out a schedule thing for myself too Kerstin.

I know that at night I think to myself 'ok, up early tomorrow and walk, or something; before the day starts'.....and then when that alarm goes off, all I want to do it stay and keep on dozing!

In the past (when I was really strict with my workouts!!) I did it about an hour after I finished work. That way I had some 'chill out' time and then did what I needed to do. I have to start doing that again, as it seems it's the only thing that helped me workout consistantly.

I've tried the straight after work time too, but don't have the energy for it every day! The later in the evening thing wouldn't work for me. I need the unwinding time too much ;-)

As for the eating thing- what kind of foods are you eating for snacks? Something with some carbs might be what you need for the 'fuller feeling'; or fruit/veggies.

Looking forward to seeing what others have to say....

Kerstin, I'm not much help w/ the exercising in the evening, because I get up at 5am to walk, but I do find that it's much easier to get up if I have everything set out the night before (my workout clothes, socks and shoes).

About the hunger pains...I found two great articles and I agree w/ them totally. If I eat a bowl of special K cereal for breakfast (for example) I am painfully starving an hour later. If I eat a bowl of frosted mini wheat cereal instead, I am fine until mid morning when I have a small healthy snack (usually a peice of fruit...a small apple is about 80 calories). And I agree w/ one of the other posters that it's also a matter of habit. After I made it past the first week or two of just going to bed early instead of eating anything, I was not starving at night any more.
