Hi. Is it ok to work out during the week that I have my period? I go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week and work out for about 45 minutes to an hour. I would get on the tredmill for at least half an hour. Is that too much workout during my mentral cycle?

Hi jgirl. I found this online:

What can women do to relieve their symptoms?

There are several things that will help relieve discomfort:

  • while menstruating, refrain from drinking caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea, cola or cocoa.

  • avoid stress. Relaxation and massage can work wonders.

  • exercise and staying fit can help prevent painful periods.

  • keep your abdomen warm.

  • finally, use pain-relieving medicines if necessary.

And I didn't find anything that said it was bad to exercise during your period. This actually says it's good for cramps to exercise. :) HTH

As the others said, I have read that moderate exercise helps to relieve cramps. I saw a little book with yoga poses specifically designed for relieving cramps. I cut back a bit on the first few days, and sometimes I don't go to HKD class if it's the first day especially, but that's more because of the "gross" factor. I don't want to have to worry about that standing, sitting, stretching, kicking, etc., thing in a class full of guys; plus, I lack a little energy the first few days. Like you said, about half an hour of cardio is good enough for me. Whatever works for your body during that time will do.

I too tend to agree with what the others have posted-- learn to listen to your body, and know when you are feeling up to working out. Even if it's just some simple stretching! I find yoga a wonderful way to stretch out those 'crampy' muscles during that TOM!

I have heard that. I wonder how long term that relief is.

I find that those heat patch things Platex makes help with the bad cramps on my first few days. I was without any last month and did miss them. They're like a portable heat pad when one has to go to work or whatever. I have worn them during light exercise, not while running or anything, of course, I don't run on those days.

I have also heard that it's actually very helpful to your body to continue to work out through your cycle.

....well.....years ago I was having a severe period and my boyfriend at the time told me about this.....of course I was reluctant, but wanted some relief at the same time. It did work- and afterwards did sleep rather well ;-)

The next day things weren't half as bad!!

I think I was more grossed out than he was, lol-
