Sweetener controversy?

I just had lunch with my friend and she has vowed to give up diet soda and all things that have artificial sweeteners in them due to an article she read regarding the toxicity of aspartame.

Here is a link with side effects listed. http://www.sweetpoison.com/aspartame-side-effects.html

However, according to aspartame site (http://www.aspartame.info/info/faqs.html) it is safe.

How do you feel this is something to be concerned about? Do you use artificial sweeteners with aspartame?

I love Splenda. Ya know..... I try and do good with most the things i eat. Everything really. People get pregnant on crack. People drink, get high. Not me. I have Splenda and like salt. I gotta live. So, I'm not worried about it. HOWEVER>>>>> EQUAL bites. I don't like it. It has bad side effects for me. It makes me a little short of breath and get this......it makes my bones crack when i get up to walk, etc. I promise! I have tested it. Anyway. Just my two cents. I wish everyone well with their "getting fit" in their 30's!"

Something is always going to kill us.

It has been known for years that sacharine COULD cause cancer, didn't stop people from eating it. I am sure they figure in small does it's not that big of a deal.

Almost everything they tell us is wrong: first it was you can't eat eggs, then years later we find out eggs are fine, then they say take tons of Vitamin E great antioxidant now they say oh Vitamin E not so great. I don't think we'd ever consume anything with all the information that is out there.

I still will drink diet pepsi and eat things with aspartame in it. Doesn't worry me at all.

I stay away from artificial sweeteners. I don't trust them and it's easy enough for me to live without them, so it's not a sacrifice.

Interesting enough I've never been a big sugar fan- though I will often have some sugar in my coffee (not at home...just at work-- not sure why, lol!)

Now with regards to soda; another "diet" person here.
Keeping it in moderation :-)

...just found another article:
http://health.ivillage.com/eating/enutritional/0,,bw_7nxbthfz,00.html

"Aspartame (brand names NutraSweet or Equal) is made from two amino acids (the building blocks of protein) and has almost no calories. It has been in wide use for 30 years. The warning label concerns only people born with a rare genetic condition called phenylketonuria (PKU), usually diagnosed at birth, who lack the ability to process one of the amino acids in aspartame. For everybody else it's safe, according to exhaustive research, as well as reviews by the FDA, World Health Organization, and other authorities. Rumors have run rife on the Internet that aspartame causes headaches, dizziness, and almost every disease in the book, but there are no data to back up these claims. Ten years ago the rumor was floated that aspartame causes brain tumors--another unsubstantiated claim. Some people find it has a chemical taste. It cannot be used in cooking."
