Although I wasn't as ready as I had wanted to be, I got up early Sunday morning and went to the local hospital campus for the For Women Only 5K Run/Walk. It was a bit warmer than they had initially predicted, about 48 at race time.

The event itself was very festive, a DJ before the race to take requests "to get you ladies ready to run this race," the usual T shirts and gift bags and the planned raffles and prizes after the race. Part of the procedes raised from the entry fee from the event were to benefit an organization called Girls on the Run. Their goal is to teach girls about life long health and fitness. They also seem to have a running club. The girls and their coaches/sponsors participated in the race.

Initially, I had hoped for 12 min. miles, but I didn't realize how long it would take for me to get into shape to run an entire 5K. I was using the program from CoolRunning, but had experienced some interruptions due to the MI weather and a little leg injury. My goal was then to finish under 45 min. I expect I was close, but will have to check the offical results on the website when they're up.

My first mile was the fastest I had ever had. I was worried though about how I would finish that being the case. I was pleased at how strong I felt at the end. I could have finished a bit faster I think, but along the way I met Jenna, one of the Girls on the Run.

She asked if we were at 2 miles yet so I told her we weren't but were very close. She talked to me about their practice run earlier in the week and about her birthday and her friends for a while. She is either going to be 12 or is 12 going to be 13 this week. Anyway, her friends came back for her at the 2 mile mark. They wanted to run the last mile, but she didn't seem convinced. They went on, but I caught up with her after another half mile. She was tired so I walked with her. I had wanted to run the rest, but since I wasn't competing for a place, we walked on for a while. As we neared the end, those cheering us on along the way were encouraging everyone to run and finish strong. I asked her if she wanted to run it, and she did, with that energy of youth, she beat me to the finish line, but I did get to run to the finish. They had food bags with donuts and stuff and oranges and bananas at the end for us. I had some fruit since a donut didn't look good to me at that moment.

It was a lot of fun. I'm so glad I did it. SO took me home so I could shower, and I made it to church before the sermon. Sunday was a rather productive day. After church, I went to SO's house to watch the Pistons and he made us dinner, grilled tuna steaks.

One of my HKD classmates said he will run one with me sometime, but he's a real distance runner. He said he doesn't usually run to be competitive so he would keep me company. We're looking at one of the final events this track club hosts, which includes a 5K a 10K and a half mile fun run, in September. By that time, I should be able to run the whole 5K.

I was wondering how it went for you Lorie-- glad to hear it went so well. Good for you!! And it sounds like you had fun, and all for a great cause too. I like the way you joined Jenna in walking for a bit; that was really nice of you, and I'm sure really appreciated!!
