advice and support. I weigh 143lbs and am 4 feet 11. I'd like to weigh 100lbs which means I have 43lbs to lose.
I'm planning on walking every morning at 7am but so far, I haven't been able to muster enough willpower to get up on time. I guess I'm just not a morning person.
I undergo dialysis 3 times a week and I have home fellowship one evening a week, which means I only have 3 evenings to work out. That's why I hatched the 7am plan but I'm just too lazy and tired at 7am to make myself wake up to do it. I guess I just have to force myself.
I'm also cutting down the amount I eat, I have a sedentary job, btw. I tried following the south beach diet but I just can't give up white bread and rice. If I do, I'll have nothing to eat.
Btw, I'm 32 and living with my parents. My mom does the cooking. I don't earn enough to live on my own. I wish I did but I don't.
So, a big Hi to everyone here and I hope we can be friends.
Hugs,
Elaine

Hi Elaine, Welcome to the board. I'm Dawn and I'm also a newbi here. This has been such a great board. These ladies here are full of support.
I can fully understand that part about not being a morning person - neither am I! ;-)
If you have only 3 evenings per week, then why not just start with that? 3 times a week is not a bad start. Later on, as your energy level increases, you may be able to, say, walk 3 evenings and maybe on weekend mornings when you can do it at a more "civilized" time such as 9 am?
Make sure you invest in a good pair of shoes before starting, especially if you are diabetic.
Dear minisinge,
I'm not a diabetic. I have SLE, an autoimmune difficiency disease where the body produces mutant antibodies that attacks its own organs. In my case, it attacks the kidneys, I had skin problems too but that has cleared up, and I'm so thankful; as the rashes are very itchy and unsightly.
The alarm went off this morning but I was so tired that I just turned it off and went back to sleep. I really have to force myself, I guess. But I will go for a walk this evening.
If I'm to walk in the morning, I can only go at 7am or even better at 6.30am as the sun is too hot at 9am (I live in Malaysia).
Thanks for you reply. I guess I just have to force myself up at 7am but I will start with 3 evenings a week first.
Hugs,
Elaine
Dear Dawn,
I'm on a low-salt, low-potassium, low-protein and low-phosphate diet. And yes, I'm restricted to 750mls of liquids a day. I try to keep to this diet but sometimes it's hard.
It is my own fault that I have to undergo dialysis at such a young age (32). I didn't really control myself diet wise and that's why my kidneys have deteriorated so quickly. I was diagnose with SLE in 1997 and if I had adhered to the restricted diet, I wouldn't have had to undergo dialysis so soon but I guess it's no use crying over spilled milk.
SLE is an autoimmuned dificiency disease where to body produces mutant antobodies that attacks its own organs, in my case, my kidneys. I am really depressed at this turn of events, I wish I was normal and didn't have to to undergo dialysis. I'm really mad at myself for not controlling my diet from the beginning. But I guess what's done is done.
Thanks for your advice, I guess I just have to force myself up every morning to walk. I just wish I could spring out of bed raring to go but I guess I'm just not a morning person ;-)
Hugs,
Elaine
Yeah, Its hard sometimes to just get up and spring into action, but if you want something bad enough you'll just get up and get it done.
I am by no means a morning person so I moved my alarmclock away from my bed. That way when it goes off in the morning I have to physically get out of bed in the morning to turn it off. I also have my walking/jogging clothes ready by my clock. Also, I was very negative towards myself so I learned to talk about myself more positively. While I was going for my walk or run, I was "pumping myself up" and feeling pride in every little accomplishment instead of beating myself up because of the things I didn't do.
Hope this helps.
Cheryl.
Hey Elaine, welcome to the board!!!
Hi, Elaine. I am not a morning exercise person either. I enjoy working out after sitting at the computer all day. If you're new to exercise and if three evenings is all you have, then walk on those three evenings. It's a start, especially if getting up isn't working right now. I can get up and workout if I have evening commitments, but knowing I don't have to every morning helps, so if you want to tell yourself you'll walk in the evenings and just get up early to walk on the day you have fellowship in the evening, that might work too. You may find that you don't mind getting up and doing it that way.
As far as diet, I don't like diets that eliminate food groups. Have you tried brown rice? It's not bad at all, especially if you make it to go with a sauce. I read, and tried, a recipe for a sauce that was almost like a pasta sauce, with tomatoes and chicken breast and garlic and onion (I would have added green pepper near the end too) over the brown rice. It was really good. You can also make a lemon parmesan rice just by adding a little lemon juice in place of some of the water and a little parmesan cheese over the rice. There are also some really good nutty breads available, some even have a sweet taate, and whole wheat or nine grain breads if you can eat those things.
I have found that cutting down portion size does make a difference though. I have made a real effort to do that this year, and have added in yogurt and fruit as snacks. It works. And walking will too.
Lorie
Welcome to the board Elaine, from Malaysia!!! I would agree with the others about talking with your doc regarding any 'diet' changes in your eating habits. With your restricted diet, due to your SLE, I'm sure they can give you some guidelines to lose weight.
As for exercising, I'm with you- not in the morning, lol! I much prefer to do it after work (I'm a school teacher so get off early enough in the day to not really have a problem with scheduling it in, it's just actually getting it done I have the problem with!!)
This is a wonderful board for support-- looking forward to posting with you~

Hello Islandgirl,
Thanks for your welcoming reply. I will try talking to my doctor when I next see her but she will probably recommend that I see a dietitian.
Wow! you have only 11lbs to go! congrats! What is your goal weight and what is your height? (If you don't mind me asking). How did you manage to lose all that weight?
Actually, I know what I should do to lose weight and diet wise, I know too, but it's actually doing it that's the problem. As I live in Malaysia, almost all foods have rice or noodles in them and my Mom always cooks rice too, so I will have nothing to eat if I cut out rice or noodles. All I can do is eat less but my weight is coming down very slowly, too slow for my liking. So, I'd really like some pointers on how to speed up my weight loss.
I must be doing something wrong if I'm losing weight so slowly. Anyway, thanks again for your post.
Hugs,
Elaine
