How much to lose?

Dear Friends,

Hi, my name is Elaine, I'm 32, Chinese, stand 4 feet 11 inches tall and weigh roughly about 145lbs. The thing is, I don't know how much I should lose. Right now, I look awfully fat in photos. According to what I've read, I should be 100lbs for my height. But I'm wondering, is that too much?

My Dad also told me that all Chinese females are small-framed, further supporting the fact that I need to lose 45lbs. I did the wrist test and I think I'm medium framed, so how much should I lose.

Also, has anyone here heard of the South Beach Diet? I find it really hard to follow as white rice and bread are a staple in my home (I come from Malaysia). It's also difficult to follow because I don't do the cooking, my Mom does. I still live with my parents because I can't afford to live on my own.

The things is, I'm also lazy to exercise, I tried setting my clock at 7am so I can exercise first thing in the morning but I find it so difficult to rise. I guess I'm just not a morning person. But I feel that I have to do it because I only have 3 evenings a week to exercise. I plan to exercise everyday because I feel I need to to lose all this weight.

I was hospitalized in 2003 and my Doctors upped my meds so I gained a lot of weigh. Well, I take a lot less meds now but the weight still won't go! I'm so frustrated. Right now my weight is yo-yoing between 63kgs to 64kgs (About 145lbs). I seem to have hit a plateau. I feel that increasing exercise might break the plateau but am I not losing weight because I'm still eating white rice and bread? I'm cutting down what I eat drastically but I still don't seem to be losing much weight.

Any advice? I guess I just have to force myself to exercise more. But any advice food wise? As I live in Malaysia, it's very hard to avoid taking noodles and rice (over-processed and simplified carbs).

I feel very depressed about my weight. I'm single and never had any kids but I look fat enough to be someones grandma who's had upteen kids! I look awful! I hate being photographed because I look like a whale! Please help!

Hi Elaine,

Steffy & Miranda offered great advise. Start slow. Jumping in with an all or nothing attitude is a set up for failure. It takes time to loose weight.

It is often better, and easier, to set smaller goals, such as trying to drop 5 lbs by the end of July, and then another 5 lbs by the end of August, and so on. That way you can see how you look and feel before deciding what is a healthy and comfortable weight for you; not to mention a goal of 5 lbs is lot less daunting than 45 lbs!

Good to see you again Elaine! The previous posters have offered some really sound advice, and I agree with the small goals rather than looking all the way down the road :-)

Let us know if you think you might try the South Beach Diet-- there's a board for it here on iVillage!
