I am so saddened watching and reading the news of Hurricane Katrina. Having been through Hurricane Marilyn down here in 1995, I know only too well what the aftermath is like. My heart truly goes out to those who were in her path!
Here's an article I just read on 'Yahoo news':

There is a board here on iVillage dedicated to Louisiana, and there is a 'Member to Member' post going on at the moment to send out thoughts and prayers to those affected by the catastrophic devastation left by Hurricane Katrina. Please go to the link below and send thoughts and prayers their way.

I just read this over there:

Here's a link I just heard in the media, and it's very good -- aid information, official updates state by state, news announcements, and more:

One of the announcements here is that Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco declared Wednesday (today)

The only thing I don't quite understand is why so many people didn't heed the warnings saying to evacuate the city because it was a category 5 heading straight for them? I mean with so many leaving the state before the hurricane came why did so many stay? It's just so sad to see so many.
The looting is disturbing and I find it really sad to see that they are going into convelescent homes and harrassing, stealing and hurting the elderly who are probably panicked, frightened and have no family around.
Here is the latest:

I really can't bear to watch it on TV. It's like 9/11 all over again, I can't watch all that despair or I'd slit my wrists. My local radio station is doing a donation to the Red Cross for the least 3 days, and a group of kids started a lemonade stand so they could donate all proceeds to the Hurricane victims through the red cross, they started it yesterday at the end of the day yesterday they had 1,400 dollars...it broke my heart...I was just crying.

Bush cut levy repair funding by 80% to fund the war effort prior. They were already in disrepair, as well. The governor of Louisiana warned him of the possible dangers involved in letting the levies go without constant upkeep and care months before the storm, and then three weeks prior to the storm (when its existence had become known). :(
And then, four days of going without federal aid.... Imagine....
There are so many holes in what the media is reporting it is killing me.
Did you know that there are specific laws in both state and federal government that dictate that the first responders MUST BE local officials, not federal and that federal cannot swoop in and take over the effort as Bush had to eventually do due to the failing leadership in LA?

Yes, nothing is as easy as black and white, is it?
Excuse the pun. :)
P.S. Kiervin-
I don't want to come across as argumentative. I enjoy having discussions with people who are informed and exchanging opinions. I hope you don't take me as being rude. I'm a caustic and sarcastic liberal at times. If so, I apologize. I actually enjoyed reading a few of your posts here, and want to let you know I mean no harm. ^_^
.... who was pointing fingers?
People couldn't leave because most that got hit were poor.
Also, you seem to listen to Fox news a lot. Check your sources before attacking others. She was only giving you numbers and facts. Another fact is the National Guard is meant to stay in the US for cases such as this; yet, they are in Iraq.
Thought about joinging this board, but I can't deal with people who blame poor blacks for their situation and say that they cared more about partying than their own homes. They are poor, alone, and dying. How do you leave if you have no means? How do you leave if you have no money, no credit? Not all poor blacks care about partying.
How sick can you be?
