Technically I don't do this. I feel like I'm playing hooky. However, if I have to stay home with one of the kids I take full advantage.
I could have chosen multiple answers but picked reading because that would probably be my main objective. However, I would also squeeze in a movie I'd been wanting to see that only I would watch and probably get some house work caught up.
My husband does this from time to time. However, he acts like he's really sick even to me???? Like I can't tell when he is faking it. Doh!

Whenever I start to feel exhausted & run down I try to schedule a day off. I have never called off a day but I'm lucky that I can normally get a vacation day approval from my boss with a one day notice.
I'm actually getting to that point now & trying to pick which day I'm going to ask for off. Maybe next Friday...

Ann, I'm with you - I rarely get sick and almost never take a day off unless it's vacation, but this week I just felt like I was hitting the end of my rope.
Well, I hope you feel better after your mental health day! I've had discussions about them being considered as sick days too-- I think when you NEED one it should be counted as a sick day, personally.
Anyway.....just wondering (or perhaps it's me being just as nosey as you, re. your post to Steffy!!)- why are you guys moving? And how did the viewing go?
Just curious ;-)

Well I voted for watching TV/Movies....but I also do other things on these days. I've probably taken about 4 in my 12 years of teaching- not too bad. They've all been for various reasons, but all legit!
Personally I think they're important to take ;-)
What use are you at work when you are about to blow up at something or someone???

You bet your sweet booty I do.
We don't have "sick/personal" days here. They are called Choice. And can be used for anything, no explanation needed. Sometimes I wake up in the morning have a splitting sinus headache and can't fathom dealing with my job and I'll call out. We all need a "break" from the daily grind.
It doesn't make us not have a good work ethic if we take the occasionally day off to just "be".
I agree. SOme time you just need time off to chill out. It amazes me how time off from work differs from country to country.
I would have picked a few also. Last sick day was to study. I also clean run errends watch tv or movies. Spa days are scheduled.
I would do the same thing if I were in your position Miranda. "We're part of a union, and the regulations are that we gt 10 casual sick days a year." I think you should take advantage of that. Right now I work for a "small" business and really only three of us that handle the majority of the work. We don't get sick days at all and only 2 weeks vacation regardless of how long we work here. Though I think he is very generous. I always ask him to check how many days I have of vacation and if I'm asking for a vacation day that I'm not allowed I understand. However, he never says I'm over and always pays vacation when I ask for it. However, he only pays the holidays he has to. If X-mas falls on a weekend we get no holiday pay. Plus I haven't had a raise in 3 years.
It's not a demanding job and allows me to meet my families needs when necessary so I'm okay with all that.
Now when I worked at a bank. We only got 6 six days. If we went six months with out missing a day we would get one "merit" day. Day off with pay. Most of us thought that sucked so we took our six sick days. Typically they would only do .10 cent raises.

I usually schedule a day off, when I feel like I'm about to lose it. I voted exercise because I had my birthday off back in the spring, then took another day off in the summer, and it was a Friday, so I went to the afternoon HKD class and spent some extra time there both times working out and practicing with the black belt. I also usually do a little shopping for things I need on those days as well.
I am certainly feeling the need for another mental health day soon.
Back at work today and feeling much better, and now I have the whole weekend ahead of me to do as I please!!
