Beginning Running Question

I was wondering, for those of you just starting out, or who recalls what it was like...lol. My back hurts. It's stiff. I would ASSUME it's from running. from maybe twisting as i take steps? I'm just wondering if anyone else has/had this problem. And what can i do to alleviate the pain/stiffness. The rest of my body is fine (because i warm up and cool down and am very good about it). But my back, oh my aching back (i'm old. lol).

Thanks.

p.s. i completed the entire series of run/walks :) yay! almost killed me, but okay, i did it.

I can't remember or not if you are, um, well endowed?? I know for me (and I am) my back pain is mainly in my upper back region, and shoulders. (I'm actually calling in to get a massage today!!) I think Gretchen's idea for Yoga is great. I know I find it very helpful on those days where my back is bad. Also a *hot* bath/shower! And remember good posture girl- sit up straight!! ;-)

It could be strength, however, I golf, you'd think I have back strength. I do have a yoga tape for my back, I should use that :) loosen up my back more, and get more strength. and do some sit ups too.

i'm just sore. i need a new bed.

Actually, it's my whole back. From about shoulder blades, down to my lower back. I am going to start on sit-ups for the lower back, but man. the whole thing is just sore. It reminds me of when i haven't played golf in a long time, and go and play 18 on a tough course.

just stiff. and btw. no sore muscles in my legs at all. i'm telling ya, when you warm-up and cool-down properly, you don't even need to stretch. although, i do a bit.

Um, I'm not to the point where it hurts because of that. And yes, I feel for ya. :)

I talked with my friend, who ran track in college/hs and one day may want to coach, she said, since i'm new, it's probably from the twisting when you run (more so than walking, right), and maybe the pounding. Cuz I know it's more muscular pain then joint soreness. She told me to keep going, but if i don't feel any better in like 2 weeks, to go see a doc or something. and yes, said the yoga may help, and to stretch my back after my warm-up, since my legs seem to be okay.

Do take it nice and easy Cher-- and if there is no improvement do go see your doc!!

Most definitely. Trust me, I'm so stiff, just sitting here. lol. I think I'll go take some ibuprofen. Ease it up a bit. ouch. :)

As for my back. I think it could be a few things. 1. just working out again, as sometimes, my back hurts if I golf more than normal. 2. my bed isn't the best and no, I can't afford a new one, 3. I normally have back problems to begin with.

I'm curious, you said that WHERE I hurt is NOT a natural response to running. Would it be a natural response, IYHO, to any sort of new workout?

I am trying to remember if I had this problem 3 years ago, when I was running outside, versus a treadmill. But then again, my back hurts when I do anything strenous (hiking, golfing, running, swimming, etc). That's the only reason I'm NOT thinking it's the treadmill. Because I know, to a point, this is normal when I do anything out of the ordinary and strenous. Maybe I just forgot this is normal. lol. Cuz I do have back issues to begin with.

Overall, I can hear all the excuses in my head already, why running outside is NOT a good idea. the weather, the fact it's getting darker earlier, the fact that i live on the border of a bad neighborhood, etc. So, I'll have to trudge forth with the treadmill and see what happens or give up running altogether right now.
