Beginning Running Question

I was wondering, for those of you just starting out, or who recalls what it was like...lol. My back hurts. It's stiff. I would ASSUME it's from running. from maybe twisting as i take steps? I'm just wondering if anyone else has/had this problem. And what can i do to alleviate the pain/stiffness. The rest of my body is fine (because i warm up and cool down and am very good about it). But my back, oh my aching back (i'm old. lol).

Thanks.

p.s. i completed the entire series of run/walks :) yay! almost killed me, but okay, i did it.

Because the muscles that you are using are not in the back (disclaimer, yes your back and abs are used to keep you upright but they are not the primary muscle groups being utilized.

Well, I guess this puts me in a VERY tough situation. Why? Because, if I can't run, can't do aerobics (tendonitis in my shoulder, and also makes my back sore), can't swim (same reason), can't cycle (this really kills my knees), what do I have left?

Also, I would assume if I can't run, I can't walk, because I have feet issues, leg issues, back issues, and nope, can't afford to get them fixed by a chiropractor.

I agree with what you're saying about overpronating (which I could be doing because of my plantar fascitis, but I pay attention to it while I'm running), tilted hips (because my back is out of whack), bad posture (cuz i can't see myself), etc, running on a treadmill or ground won't make a difference at all. Maybe running isn't for me.

One thing that concerns me is how you're "diagnosing" me. You keep talking about pain, like I'm having shooting pain in my back. Like I have a pinched nerve, slipped disk, etc. That is NOT the type of "pain" I am talking about. The type of pain I have, is the same as when I go golfing....and haven't golfed in a few weeks. It's the same kind of pain I get when I wake up in the morning, and my back is stiff. Basically, it's muscular stiffness achiness (not PAIN, or SHARP PAIN).

However, all in all, I'm going to be flat out honest. I am grateful for what you wrote, but I'm not going to stop running on a treadmill. If it helps me to lose weight, then that's what I'll do. I have lived with pain of all sorts a long long time, everyday pain, sharp pain, achy pain, so this is nothign new. And well, I konw myself, if I try any other "exercise" I'll just stop because I'll have excuses galore. Unfortunately, even though I hate the treadmill, it works. It keeps me coming back. And it's fast enough, close enough, in a climate controlled area, no ppl around, in teh dark.......that I'm WILLING to go exercise. So, again, thank you. I honestly think I'll be fine, and well, if the pain continues, so be it. I am beginning to realize, it's nothing new......because when I do aerobics, there's a LOT MORE of me that is in pain, than what I am living with now.

I'm not "diagnosing" you, I'm merely pointing out

yup, that was wonderful info she posted. :) And I do have a yoga back tape, have no idea who it is though. I need to move some couches around, actually get rid of one, cuz it's taking up WAY too much space in my house. anyhow. i will all let you know, if i'm better in a couple of weeks, or WAY worse. if WAY worse, then yes, i know i will have to stop.

The other thing, and I cannot believe I forgot to mention it is that you might want to invest in the book "Pain Free" by Pete Egoscue.

Actually, I think I can do that. That i can afford :) I mean, I know I do have issues, and I hope by the time I can afford to go to a chiro or good doc, i'm not too old and it's too late. know what i mean? so, i don't mind doing exercises to hlep (I just did the yoga one).

btw, by doing the yoga tape, I think i'm pinpointing WHERE and WHAT is hurting. and sadly, i think it does have to do with misalignment to my back. ugh! but the chiro wants like $2k to fix it. anyhow.

i'll get the book, hopefully it can help me. trust me, right now, i'll spend the $15, but can't afford the $2k.

btw. the pain/soreness, is when i curl my back (like slouching forward a lot) it's like the muscles are pulled. but only on my right side (along the spine, from brastrap to shoulderblades). i really do think it's a pulled muscle more than anything else, cuz i'm just stiff. however, i will get the book. at least, that can help with the knee, the foot, the back. :)

thanks for the reference.
