Eating healthier is very expensive, fresh fruits, fresh veggies, organic, fresh meats, organic etc. EXPENSIVE!!!!
It's much cheaper to buy boxes of spaghetti and a couple jars of sauce but that would have me balloon up.
Gym memberships are rather expensive around here, between 45-50 a month and you need to lock in for a year.
I guess it's about priorities.
Gym memberships here, can range from $20-$150/mo depending on what you want. Where I go, standard sign up is $40, but lucky me, I pay $15.50/mo. It's a midrange but nicer gym than the $20 I used to go to (clientele wise, not machine wise). But I realized, I HATE HATE HATE HATE (did you get that?LOL) working out in front of ppl, so I pay my fees and go to my apartment complex's gym (crap machines, but they work and $30 deposit for the key).
Eating healthy alone, is very expensive. If I could afford it, I'd use one of those services that deliver your day's worth of food to your house, and you heat it up or whatevers. Although, I do think it's like, $40/day.
In all honesty. I can see why and how "stars" can lose weight so fast. 1. personal trainer at home, 2. chef, 3. lots of time on their hands. If I had that, I'd be thin by New Years.
But in all honesty, yes, I do believe that many magazines cater to people that have money, for equipment, machines, food, time, etc.
lastly $1,000 for a WEEK retreat isn't so bad. for a weekend, WAY overpriced. I mean, K took me out of town, hotel alone cost $650 for 3 days. So for a week, I'm all over it. As long as I don't have to fly anywhere. For that, you can have a nice vacation in Hawaii (if you fly out of LAX). :)
Financial is probably one of my biggest obstacles, other than myself. :oP
The rec. annual membership is reasonable. I think I paid $170 for a year for a family of 4. Note I have a family of six. Cost extra for them, think like $20 per person. Right now I'm the only one using it. We do get discounted prices off classes they offer but not much. Cost me over $100 for an "acting in the afternoon" class for DD.
The pricier places like Wyoming Athletic Club is $803 annually or $73 a month. Do have to pay an initiation fee of $75.00. Lifetime is $1,164.00 annually for a family of 4 with a sign up fee of $75.00. I'm sure both of these places offer more classes and probably more contemporary type stuff like spinning as well as more machines etc. Also, you may not have to pay additional fees for the classes but I'm not sure.
I'd like to buy my own treadmill but that's not happening in the near future at this point. Figure I need about $800 to get what I want.
Eating with a family of 6 is a nightmare. How can you avoid hamburger helper when everyone is busy and it's cheap and easy. We have switched over to mostly wheat products as far as pastas, breads and so forth. I'm working on the potato thing but it's something I just have to skip. Betty Crocker needs to come out with wheat pasta meals or something.

Interesting thoughts here...
I think the retreats do actually sound reasonable enough-- but too much for my pocketbook. Yea, I think many of the magazines these days do cater to people who aren't struggling with money issues too much.
I don't belong to a gym-- the options down here are either; too small; not enough equipment; too pricey; or

$650 - $2,000 + is not reasonable in my book! But I'm the queen of cheap!!
Our gym membership is $30/person per month but DH's company pays half so we really only pay $15/each per month. I wouldn't belong to a place that's too much more expensive than that. Although, we have no daycare or pool or game courts so you get what you pay for I guess. I'm just happy that the trainers are all certified & very knowledgable & that there are ordinary folks who go there - no teeny tiny overly made up gym bunnies!
The yoga class that my mom & I take is $80 for 6 weeks. It runs the school year so its 4 sessions from Sept - June, so 4 X $80 each year. I think its a little pricey but the instructor is a friend of mine & I've been taking from her for about 10 yrs. Besides, my mom usually pays for me & refuses the $ when I try to pay her back.
If I did a retreat as my vacation I would spend what I ususally spend. $1,000 would be fine if everything is included and air fare was not crazy expensive. I assume the retret is inclusive so I wouldn't have to spend anything else. I don't like place that are "inclusive" but you have to pay for some services. thoes are always the best services like massage or horse back riding.
Gym price around here vary. I haven't rejoing a gym when i exercise I prefer tapes at home or sports. Diry gyms skeeve me out. Healthy food is expensive bu that is only because junk food is cheep - that is all part of the bigger marketing plan. I always laugh at that. I was in the store last night a carmel apple was $.69 but regular apples wer $1.49 a pound. guess which one was cheeper? I confess i got the carmel apple but that was my plan before i went to the store.

Now of course, this is what I would love to do in the spring - I figure I could save up $25-$40 a month for this weekend event:

You get a bit pampered, you get beautiful scenery, yoga, meals, and I think it's fairly reasonable.

It says if you book 16 ppl you can have your own private Chix in the Stix. It'd be cool if you could get 16 OF US!!
Although $260 CAD is a great price, too bad the airfare to GET THERE (for someone like me) would be like $500. Kinda kills the cheap price. lol.
this is what I wanted to do once. Actually, I wanted to go after my college graduation, instead, I went to Hawaii with my cousin :)

The classes are free, food is free, I think the only thing you truly pay for is spa services (massages, wraps, etc). I don't think it's bad for starting at $169/night.
Hey Cher, getting some of the board ladies together WOULD be awesome!!
