Hi there! I'm from getting fit in your 20's but your post caught my eye because I can totally relate! When I first started my fitness/weight loss program I also thought that everything was just way too expensive! I was on the weight watchers and didn't have much time to prepare meals so I bought the smart one's frozen meals which are not cheap, and I also had to pay $13 for the weekly meetings and my gym membership which was $29/mo ...so on... Well, being a college student at the time I was really poor and couldn't afford all of those extras so, I decided to do it on my own...First, I asked my bf for a "good" scale for xmas (I know, pathetic) but he gave me a pretty good one! So I made spread sheet where I recorded my weight every week. Second, I stopped doing the WW program and started eating healthy foods at the cafeteria like fruits, salads, soups, whole grains...etc, it was REALLY hard because they had pasta, tacos, cheeseburgers and all types of fatty foods on a regular basis. third, I downgraded my gym membership so I only had the BASIC, no classes included! So it was only $10/mo! When my birthday came around I asked friends and family members for things fitness related like workout clothes, sneakers, classes at the gym, an mp3 player...etc. Anyway, I guess my point is...It wasn't easy because everything seems to be targeted towards the well-off people...But, I did it and you can too!

That's a great idea to ask for things for gifts.....I've thought of doing that too- but have a hard time telling people what I would like, even if they ask me to tell them, lol!

But I can see the benefits of doing so ;-)

I do think that the mags out there do not realistically look at the financial state of their readership. Some of those fitness getaways seem reasonable, some not so much. But all of them are way out of my reach right now.

Other products that are presented as "picks" of some of the editors of the fitness type mags are so expensive, like the workout outfits that, for the pants, tank and hooded jacket, can cost about $200 or more total. In general, I think those outfits are cute and stuff, but I can't justify spending that kind of money on clothes. I invest in my running shoes, but I look and look online when I need some and get good brands for 40 to 60% off or better if I can.

What money I do spend, on HKD, is a lot for me. I used to think it was just me, but some of my classmates are struggling a bit with the cost too now. And our dues are very reasonable compared with other schools in the area. It costs about $200 for three months, which, as I said, is pretty good. But man that has added up over four years. And then there are the testing costs, and black belt testing and uniform will cost a small fortune...

Ya, cost can be a factor in fitness. It's a good thing I invested in a good pair or shoes 'cause I need to do some walking since it's basically free!

I love yoga clothes; I want one of those tops too.

Asking for fitness stuff is a good idea. I asked for a ball for my birthday because my other one wouldn't hold air anymore, but no one got me one - and they're pretty cheap. I got some cash though so I went and bought my own replacement stability ball. SO paid my dues for HKD for three months one time for my birthday. It was so nice of him, but I thought it was too much to spend on a birthday gift.
