Hey everyone,

I 've been wondering for years, what is the skinny on restaurant Chinese food??? I love, Chinese vegetables, ( like vegetable kow) and I've been eating it for years. I 've searched high and low, and can not seem to figure out if I am sabotaging my diet??? or doing it a body good. All the calorie counters exclude this dish. This is the one thing I can not mimic at home.

Any ideas???

I think eaten in moderation like anything else is fine.
Most chinese food is laden with a lot of sodium and overall isn't **good** for you. I don't know much about the dish you are referring too.

I just think chinese food in general isn't the healthiest so making it for yourself, less sodium, less sauces etc is best. If you go out for chinese, just do it occasionally.

I agree with sniffle_sally here; a lot of sodium, and MSG are my biggest peeves with Chinese (I too love the stuff!!)

Cajun_mommy: what you're talking about is Mongolian BBQ. That's what they call all those places here, regardless of what the true name is.

IG: Teppanyaki is where they cook your food, what you order, at a table grill. Same concept, except one is Japanese, and you don't pile the food on your own plate (you order something) and one is more about show (Teppanyaki), versus just cooking the stuff (mongolian). :)

Have you tried looking for the vegetables that you like, in a Chinese cookbook, and see what they put in it? Is it really called Vegetable Kow? Or find out exactly how it's spelled and do a search online. I'm sure somewhere out there, you can find the ingrediants, and once you know that, then you can figure out how healthy (or unhealthy) that stuff is.

This was interesting:

Basically, if all you're eating is the veggies, then great. If not, then it can turn bad. lol. Obviously, steamed is better than stir fried. But lots of veggies is a good thing.

I've been trying to eat more vietnamese here, becuase you get like 90% veggies, 10% meat. Granted, the eggrolls aren't helping. lol.

thanks for your very helpful advice.. I am going to try the suggestions you mentioned. Basically, I guess everyone is confirming what I knew all along. The sauce, and the sodium.. I guess thats why I am hooked..
