Miranda- sorry to hear you're not all that happy with how this year has gone.......hopefully 2006 will make you happier with yourself, and yes- we'll be here to remind you to look after #1 (YOU!!!!) when you need to be reminded. I think we all go through stages of making sure everyone else is alright, and forget about ourselves. Here's to us NOT doing that 'next year' ;-)
2005 was not that bad, I have had worse years and know that I will make steps to improve next year. I seem to make resolutions all the time, almost daily, and I need to be forgiving to myself and others. I hope to be better as accepting the quirks of others and to keep an open mind. I have worked really hard at smiling more in 2005 and will continue this in 2006. Besided not wanting my mothers frown lines, it is definately a mental and physical release to smile.
On the note of self improvement, I have the following offering....
I read a lot of self help books, and have read a few lately that have really helped...
Currently reading the second book mentioned by Dale Carnegie
How to stop worrying and start living. How to win friends and influence people.
AND....I read these over and over.....there is always something to gain!
Daniel Goldman
any of his books on Emotional Intelligence. I feel these books changed my life. Emotional Intelligence is a learned skill that has found to create more personal and professional success than IQ. Specifically, the ability to have compassion, empathy, delay gratification, etc. The series helps people look at themselves, how to have EI at work, to raise children with EI and so many other things.
I have also discovered that I need to lighten up and know that all things can not be perfect. Along with this I need to work on my sense of humor. To this end, I am reading more fiction and it is doing my mind and spirit a world of good. I have been a full time student for years, and think that it is wearing down on my spirit. In fiction writing I find a welcome escape that I have been depriving myself.
Are you happy with how this year has gone? NO! I gained some weight and interviewed for teaching jobs (5 times) without success.
Have you been thinking about changes you'll make in 2006? YES!
When you make resolutions (if you do) do you make more 'traditional' ones (save money, lose weight, etc...) or more unique ones (be a positive person, become less critical, etc....)? I actually made 3 resolutions for 2006. One is to lose the weight I've gained (traditional), get that teaching job (it's on the horizon, I'm feeling very positive about this), and finally work on communicating better with my "domestic partner". This is the man I love with all of my heart and soul, but we aren't communicating very well. I want to knock down my walls and open up more.
Thanks for the links to those books- books like that can hold some very inspirational stuff, and re-reading them is almost a must!! I love that one of your resolutions last year was to smile more; might have to use that one myself this year :-)
In any case, it's good to have you here, I look forward to seeing your smiling face around here more often!
Keeping the number of resolutions down is a good idea. Plus having them all in different areas of your life is good too. I'm a teacher too (Montessori for 3-6yr olds)- what do you teach? Best wishes with your communication issues....and looking forward to seeing you around here this year- these ladies will be wonderful at helping you along the fitness and health journey!

The first and most impactful book from D. Goldman I read was Emotional Intelligence. Links to EI books below:
