Saw this on 'Real Age' this morning, and thought it could open up a worthwhile discussion...

Deep Sleep Diet

Add a good night's sleep to your checklist of helpful weight-loss aids.

Sleep deprivation interferes with appetite-suppressing hormones, increases stress hormone levels, and decreases a person's glucose tolerance, all of which may contribute to weight gain. Another way sleep loss may help pile on the pounds: late-night munching. Go to bed and get up at the same time each day to help achieve sounder sleep.

RealAge Benefit: Getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night can make your RealAge as much as 3 years younger.

MORE Although more research is needed to confirm the link between sleep and weight, getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night can make your RealAge as much as 3 years younger and help improve your mood. Overweight and obese adults are more likely to report skimping on sleep compared to people with healthy body mass indexes. Expending more calories than you take in is the simple science behind any successful weight-loss program. The best way to do this is to eat a healthy, reduced-calorie diet and boost the amount of time you spend exercising. Other habits may boost your weight loss efforts or hamper them. For example, skimping on sleep negatively alters levels of hormones involved in carbohydrate metabolism and appetite control, which may contribute to weight gain. And living a hectic, high-stress lifestyle may make it harder for you to focus on your health and may increase the likelihood that you'll make poor food choices and skip your exercise routine. Set yourself up for success by living a balanced lifestyle, in addition to balancing calorie intake and expenditure.

1. What time do you normally go to bed? Go to sleep?
Usually it's around midnight when I get to bed, sometimes a little earlier. Recently I've been getting into bed and reading for about half an hour.

2. What are your surroundings like when you sleep?
The room must be dark, and besides the sound of the fan, quiet!

3. Do you sleep all night, or wake up several times?
Normally I do wake up a number of times (between 1 and 3 times). Last night I slept all the way through though!

4. How many hours, on average, do you sleep a night?
About 6.5-7hrs (weekends perhaps a little longer).

5. Is your body/mind/life affected when you have a poor sleep?
My patience is definitely tested the following day.....

1. What time do you normally go to bed? Go to sleep? Lately, about 10:00. I go to sleep about 11:00, depends, right now, on what's going on w/the Olympics.

2. What are your surroundings like when you sleep? (quiet, light on, etc...) I like it dark, but I have a street light shining in. I'm used to it now though. I also like it cooler when I'm trying to sleep - and it has been that lately here. When it's not Olympics time, I usually fall asleep to a CD.

3. Do you sleep all night, or wake up several times? Usually I wake up a few times, sometimes thanks to Cali. I do like to sleep straight through though, so nice.

4. How many hours, on average, do you sleep a night? About six

5. Is your body/mind/life affected when you have a poor sleep? Oh ya, by afternoon I feel so out of it. I hate going to HKD if I haven't slept well the night before - can't concentrate by that time of the evening. I guess it doesn't affect my life though because I go to work and exercise still, just try to get to bed a bit early the next night.

1. What time do you normally go to bed? Go to sleep?

About 11 or 11:30. I'm usually asleep within a few minutes.

2. What are your surroundings like when you sleep? (quiet, light on, etc...)

We leave the tv on the timer, no other lights on though.

3. Do you sleep all night, or wake up several times?

I normally sleep through the night but I've been waking up before the alarm all week so far. Sometimes the cats wake me up but that's rare.

4. How many hours, on average, do you sleep a night?

About 6 during the week, about 10 on the weekends. I play catch up.

5. Is your body/mind/life affected when you have a poor sleep?

I think so. I feel much more energetic on the weekends when I have a chance to catch up on my sleep.

Questions:

I will try and keep this as simple as possible...

1. What time do you normally go to bed? Go to sleep?

On days that I have worked all night I try and get to sleep by 06:30 AM - 07:00 At the very latest... On my first night off after sleeping a few hours during the day because I had worked all night I try and get to sleep around 01:00 or 02:00. On normal days that I'm on a daytime schedule I can get to sleep anywhere from 8:00 to Midnight depending on how sleep deprived I am by that point.

2. What are your surroundings like when you sleep? (quiet, light on, etc...)

When I am sleeping during the day... It's light outside and I try and make it as dark as possible but it is still light.
