How did you decide you "goal weight"

I'm always asked how much I want to way when I talk about getting in shape.

I decided my goal weight is the weight I was before I gained. I still have lots of clothes that size & I was satisfied with how I looked. In reality, that weight is still over what the charts say I should weigh, but I was happy with it & I was healthy according to the DR.
I don't put a lot of stock into tests or charts because they can't take all the variables into account. Your goal weight should be one that you are happy & healthy at.

Hi Sonia!
My original goal weight was my highschool "skinny weight" which, although it was a good weight for me (155), isn't considered by most to be skinny. The charts say I should be 135. That seems so impossible to me. I can't even imagine what I'd look like! The thinnest I've ever been was 1 month post appendectomy (burst appendix, infection, 3 weeks in the hospital) in the 8th grade when I hit an all time low of...145. Right now I'm 170 and having a really hard time getting my body to comply with my diet and exercise routine. So I'm letting go of having a goal of anything but being as fit as I can be. I'm a 5'6", very solidly built curvy hourglass shape, and when I look in the mirror I look thin to me, having lost 65 pounds already. But still... I'd love to look at a weight chart and be on the "not overweight" side of it for once in my life. Also, have you heard that some insurances are charging more to people who smoke and are overweight? Well, our insurance is now doing that, and although I don't smoke, we could still pay more/month if I don't lose weight. Stinks, doesn't it? I lost 65 pounds and they don't give a darn. Part of me wants to rise up, be angry and say they can't tell me whats right for me. But instead I'm trying to rise to the challenge. Still a load of crap, though.

Great question!
Goal weight is an issue I have, well "issues" with.
Sonia, you know perhaps we do have some ideal weight in mind.....but in reality I think Ann hit the nail on the head when she wrote to be happy and healthy!!
I want to lose a couple of pounds, sure, but I also want to feel that 'energetic' boost you get from exercise, look good in clothes, and feel good about myself.

Well, in the beginning, I wanted to be my HS weight, which I see now is TOTALLY unreal. I wasn't overly thin. At 5'1" I weighed about 100. Average for my height/build. However, most charts I read, and for my age (age is a HUGE factor) said I should weigh 115-125. So, I figured, with building muscle (because I'll build while running and exercising), and being realistic, I'm aiming for 120.
However. If I feel absolutely wonderful at 125/130, I'll stay there. And if I feel chubby at 120, maybe I'll go down to 115. I guess, by that point, it just depends on how I feel about my body.
At this point, I'd be happy with Miranda's weight of 135. lol. Since I'm 147.
But seriously. When I feel and look good, is when I'll be happy. BTW, I"m aiming more for clothing SIZE versus a weight. i.e. I'd like to be a comfy size 6 or 8. I say comfy, because if I'm a tight 8, I'll be unhappy. and too loose is just ugly. Actually, so it too tight. lol. But seriously, if I weight a whopping 135 and can fit into a size 6 comfy, screw the weight number, I'll take the size 6. I figure, with my build, I should be able to be a comfy 6. 4 would be oh so nice, but pushing it I think. lol.
I'm babbling.
