Target heart rate question

HI Okay if I am on the treadmill and choose the target heartrate burn fat program and put in your weight age ect.... Do you not burn fat if you stay way above the target rate? It said my target range was supposed to be 117 but I had to go very very very slow to maintain that rate... Usually when I just go on the treadmill and choose the regular program my heart rate is 135 and has gotten as high as 150 am I burning fat then? Whats the diffrence. Its hard to imagine I could be doing any good staying that slow...

Hi mommy!
Thanks for posting the articles Miranda...I too get a little confused on that whole *fat burning* aspect.
For me though Angela, I want to feel like I'm "working". I just got an exercise bike from a friend who was able to use it for about an hour, but she peddled at like 15mph-- me on the other hand manage about 15mins max, but I steadily work up to about 26mph! Like I said, I want to feel like I'm working out!!

I have never really understood the whole fat burning vs cardio aspect of the machines either, which is why I was interested to read:
Which makes so much more sense.
I always love this question, because none of it is the same across the boards. Not these boards. Just using the word.
i.e. I have a heart rate monitor. Well, when I'm working HARD, my heart rate can soar up above 190. If my max HR is 220-31 (my age), that's 189. I've seen my HR, according to that band around my chest, go above 200. I know I'm not working to the point where I feel like I'm going to die, but at the same time, I also know I'm working out hard.
I have since stopped going by HR charts because, for me, in any of those min/max zones, I could be walking at a warm-up pace, and my HR is already at the high side. I go from a resting around say, 70, and can go up as high as 200.
Inke...that makes sense to me. If I spent the engergy tracking staying in a partiular range for weight loss, I may not be concentrating on my 'form'.
Bottom line, I agree, if you are working out hard without killing your self, as long as you possibly can, you are going to make a difference.
I am no expert, but it works for me.
