How quickly does the fat go on and off??

For example, if I ate very badly all last week and all the way up until Monday when I got serious about losing... might I still gain weight this week because of *last* week's bad eating? Does it take a few days to build up the fat stores from overeating?? Or does the fat pop right away?? Same question for the reverse... like how quickly do the fat cells shrink? Is it a minute by minute thing or a day by day thing or longer? Just curious about how this all works... I hope someone can explain it to me. :o)

Hmmmmm.....never given that much thought Kim, but comparing it to 'loosing the fat' made me really think. I'll have to try and find some info on that for you, unless someone else 'round here knows......

Kim, my understanding is that you need to create a 3,500 calorie deficit to lose weight, so until you build up that deficit you won't lose.

I have no idea, but from what I've learned....it takes awhile for fat to build up and to shrink away. That's why it usually takes 6 weeks of exercising to see any results. Also, being good all of a sudden, isn't going to erase the bad you did the week prior. If you had one bad day, and was good for the rest of the week, I would say it balances out more so than one bad week and starting anew Monday.
Couple of things. It's easier to gain than to lose. So yes, I'm sure you eating badly for a week, made it's dent. But by starting things Monday, you could probably slow it down or reverse it probably within a couple of weeks. As one of the CL's said, it takes a 3,500 calorie deficit to lose 1lb (I believe), however, I'm sure it doesn't take an extra 3,500 to GAIN a pound. I'm sure it takes less than that. And remember, if you ate all that junk food, and gained even 10 cells of fat, they are there forever....so maybe you can shrink them, but you've already done damage (how fast though, I have no clue).
All I can say is............instead of dwelling on HOW FAST you can change things or lose, why not concentrate on making lifestyle changes, so you won't have a bad week, bad month. And besides, if you do have a bad week, would knowing it would take you 3 weeks to fix it, really help? or would it make you more depressed? I'd concentrate on things that make you want to eat healthier and be healthier.........not so much on time (unless you wanna lose weight for a specific reason, like me and my wedding). The slower it comes off, the more likely it'll STAY off.
And definitely stay off the scale. Even once a week isn't good. I can fluctuate 5lbs easily. and all it does is make me happy, then depress me big time.
Thanks for all the thoughts on it. :o) I'm just curious...but not really stressed about it. I am telling myself that it will take a few weeks to see results because I had eaten pretty poorly for really
Oh good lord Kim, if those little twinges are fat cells producing I'm in for it!!! LOL Especially getting older....there's not a day goes by without a twinge or two!
You're right though, it is a very interesting thought! Miranda and Cher have given some great thoughts on this topic!
