Motivation!

Hi everyone,

In the last six months or so (particularly in the the last 2), I seem to have lost ALL motivation for exercise, especially weight training. I lost 50 pounds a few years ago, and have been maintaining the same weight give or take 5 pounds ever since, with or without exercise; in fact in the last several months I've lost a few pounds (which I know had to be muscle). I suppose that I am just eating less when I'm not exercising. I'd like to lose another 10 pounds, but I'm far from obsessing about it--I am at a healthy weight now. I just don't know how to get myself motivated again. I turn 30 this year and I know that this is about the time when I start losing serious lean mass if I don't weight train, but I just have NO desire to do it. How do you get going again when you've lost all motivation?

Hi,

I know exactly how you are feeling. I have noticed in the past 9-10 months that I don't have the same determination, motivation or discipline to workout or eat healthy on a consistent basis. I have lost a lot of weight over the years (213lbs. to 138lbs. but now I am sitting at around 150lbs. with 24% bodyfat) and got into really good shape about 1.5 years ago (138lbs. with 23% bodyfat) - I think I was in the best shape ever but I didn't keep up with what I was doing. For me, I know that I allow a lot of things to bother me emotionally and rather than separate myself from it, I indulge in them which leads me to eat comfort foods that are not healthy when I eat them most of the time. I use to be very disciplined and motivated to workout 5-6 times a week but after a painful break-up with my ex-bf and other changes in my life, I haven't bothered taking very good care of me.

I would tell you to examine what is going on in your life and figure out what or who is holding you back from setting and achieving new goals. I am working on this as well. I have also decided to take a break from the gym and try something new such as yoga and take up walking again. I am the type of person to get stuck in a rut or routine and I need variety at times. I am also trying not to be hard on myself and letting my body tell me what it needs rather than forcing it to eat or do something that it doesn't want to. I have gone from being very strict with myself to being too relaxed about my eating and exercising program. I am working on finding a more balanced approach so I don't feel like it's controlling my life and mind.

Good luck. Keep in touch and let me know how things are going.

Hi and welcome restlesslady and Isabella (though if I'm not mistaken you two have posted before, right?)

Motivation is a tricky one no matter what stage of fitness or weight loss you are at.
