Hi everyone ... I have never posted to this board before, but I've been reading a little and it seems very supportive.
I'm 35, and over the past couple of years I've gained about 15-20 pounds. Prior to now, I was always a fairly slim person and whenever I gained a few pounds here or there I had no problem taking it off quickly once I decided to. Well, this doesn't seem to be the case any longer! Although I've lost about 5 pounds or so since Christmas time, I feel kind of appalled that it's taken me months to do that! (I used to be able to lose 5 pounds in a week, no problem.) Could my metabolism suddenly slow down like this in the course of just a couple years?
I really enjoy walking and I have recently started doing yoga several times a week, which I really like. (In the past, other than walking, I never exercised). I feel stronger and slightly more toned, but I have not actually lost any weight. Is this not enough exercise to boost my metabolism? I'm confused because I feel like I'm not eating that much. I don't count calories, but I do watch what I eat.
I drink a whole lot of diet Pepsi ... it is a total addiction. Could that be causing my metabolism to slow down?
Any thoughts are appreciated!

I wish I could be more help and I know there are a lot of knowledgable ladies here who will have some answers for you. I'm thinking this must be part of my problem as well. I exercise but not tons and try to cut back on food but seem to just be stuck with the last nine lbs. So I'll be anxious to hear the advice you get.
Nice to meet you and hope you continue to post.
Welcome to our board!
You know I think we all get to that point you're at, and realize things are beginning to slow down, yup, like our metabolisms!!
It's great that you enjoy walking and have started doing yoga! I too have an addiction, though mine it to diet Coke, I try to curb it by allowing myself one at lunch, and one in the evening. The rest of the day is for water!!
Perhaps increasing your walks pace will help with weight loss, or walking for a longer period. Different things work for different people. Play around with your food intake; more protein, less carbs; more veggies, less fat; etc....find what works for you. If things slow down a little mix up might make the world of difference.
Also, coming here for support and ideas is a great step ;-)

Thanks, Gretchen and islandgirl for the welcome and the suggestions. I know too many carbs is a problem for me. I've cut them but probably still not enough. Increasing my pace during walks is a good idea and like you, islandgirl, I'm trying to minimize the intake of diet (in my case) Pepsi. I saw my doctor today for my yearly appointment and she said basically just what you did: play around with what combinations of food seem to help me maintain a good weight. So I'll try that.
Thanks again!

Thanks, Miranda and mom_sunnysons for your responses!
I do have a sneaky suspicion that I may be eating more than I am aware of, LOL.
I will check out fitday.com, I had never heard of it before, and I'll look at the journaling section you have here. Today on my walk I did speed up my pace quite a bit. It felt good! (It's kinda hot today, though, and I was sweating!)
I do think I need to get away from worrying about the number on the scale. Yesterday I visited my doctor, and she calculated my BMI (because I told her about my weight gain). She said it was within the normal range, but just barely. However, I notice with BMI that it does not take into account how much body fat or muscle you have. So I wonder if it's really an accurate measurement of someone's fitness?
Thanks again for your thoughts.

I hate the BMI.

AMEN!
I don't like that BMI calculation - and I think it is unrealistic for many people to obsess about being that weight.
Yeah, even though I think my doctor is great and love her attitude, I found it strange that when I told her I'd gained weight she went straight for the BMI calculation and seemed dependent on it to tell her whether I was overweight or not. I think it's kinda ridiculous. I think you're right that we just need to focus on health and not on being a certain weight.
Well, at least I'm not alone in my metabolism slowing down in my 30s. I didn't believe it would really happen either -- but here I am!
thanks for responding, cajun_mommy!
