Do you workout in front of your family?

or friends? roommates, etc?

I ask, because I realized long ago, I am embarrassed to workout in front of people I know, or a lot of people. That's why I rarely go to the "big" gym (as in the kind you pay an arm for, for the membership). I loved running at my old apt, because I could in the dark (no lights, only lighted by lights from outside), and no one was really there. I also would do my aerobic tapes at home.

Well, now that I'm living with K full-time, I doubt I'll ever do any sort of workout at home. I don't like to. Even when living with my folks, I'd either exercise before they came home, or upstairs (where no one was around). I noticed the gym is further than the one at my old apt, so I don't wanna walk there. I also noticed, there are too many good looking skinny ppl at my apt complex. lol. That intimidates me.

So, I just wondered, for those that are like this, what have your solutions been? I don't have enough time to workout after K leaves in the morning, and he's home before me. I can hit the gym, just need to get past the whole "far and beautiful ppl" thing.

Or am I alone on this one? lol.

I'm the same way. Probably in the last year I've gave up on my self conscienceness and started working out in front of family at home. To my surprise my DDs sometimes join me. Plus I sear I will kick anyone's A$$ who even give's a hint of a smile, smirk, twitch of the mouth.

The gym was a huge hurdle for me but I did it and I'm glad I did. It's hard to put yourself out there and feel vulnerable but I think it's worth it. Builds the self esteem and confidence level. Also, have a dose of humility every once in awhile. I think it's good for those of us who are a little intimidated by the thought of looking silly or unfit or whatever it is that keeps us from getting out there and doing something.

This has always been such a handy excuse for me not to work out.

I say go for it. Do what you got to do to take care of yourself. You feel more and more comfortable the more you do it.

I loved the "kick anyones ass if they so much as smirk, smile, etc" lol. GREAT! Oh that was a good laugh.

Y'know, I doubt I'd ever be comfy enough with ppl around. or at least ppl I know. I have the same problem with dancing. lol. So you can see, I dno't dance much either. As for the gym, it never did get "comfy" for me, although, I could overcome it and go. I don't think I worked out as much, nor as consistently than I did this past winter. And I (sadly) think it was due to being able to workout in the dark....alone.

I mean, I know once, this lady came in the gym, with her baby in a stroller (that kinda bugged me too, especially when the baby started screaming), and turned on the lights. I mean, if I go in, and someone has the lights on, I don't turn them off. And if they're off, I don't turn them on. I figured, they wanted it that way, they were here first, I'll leave them that way. But I guess, not everyone thinks that way.

I should at least hit the gym at my new apt, because, it's REALLY nice. lol. New equipment. I have no idea how busy it will be, and I think THAT scares me too.

I'm thinking, I will go check it out tonight...(need to see if my key works anyhow, long story there) and see how busy it is. or what. I think I'd get more comfy at the apt gym, versus the big gym or in front of DH. lol

The only kind of exercise I do in front of others is walking, LOL! I like taking long walks outside. I really don't mind using a treadmill in front of others, but anything beyond that bothers me. For me, going to the gym doesn't work. I don't know why, it just doesn't seem to stimulate or encourage me. I do like taking classes, though, such as yoga. I live alone, though, so no one will see me except my cats. And they DO watch! They seem very interested every time I do yoga. It's very strange ... they seem entranced by those yoga poses!

Though I have to say I don't mind working out with others, just prefer to take that time as MINE, kwim??

I'm thinking, the cats are thinking, "wow, I thought only we could do that". lol. I'd laugh really really hard if they joined you. LOL. Cute.

I know my dog would watch me, I'd just have to make sure he's out of my way, cuz I'll be doing aerobics.

Otherwise, same thing. I don't feel like the gym is really conducive to getting me there. All those ppl staring at me, then having to wait in line, or wait for equipment. Men sweating like pigs all over the machines, people not wiping down, women in tiny outfits. Oh, and at one gym, loads of high school girls and boys hitting on each other. bleah.

Glad I'm not alone on this one. :)

So are my cats!!! When I do Yoga they actually come over and lie on my yoga mat. Stretch out, roll around. Very strange. lol

One of my cats actually HAS done yoga with me, inkeddogmom ... he actually jumps onto my body when I'm in certain poses. It makes me laugh so hard I literally collapse!

I'm with you all the way on the gym ... also like islandgirl said, I like my workout time to be my time, and when I've been to the gym I haven't felt that way because I'm so distracted by the people around me.

Yes, my cats are fascinated with my yoga mat as well! I have to push them off sometimes. Maybe our yoga mats are giving off those calming yoga vibes or something!
