I don't get it ...

Hi all ...
Well, I got on the scale this morning after not weighing myself for over a week. I've been thinking I look better due to my exercise routine and the fact that I'm really focusing on eating better. Also, I swear I have some slight muscle definition that I didn't have

I'm just kind of jumping in here after lurking for a while...
I had the same problem as you about a month ago. I'd been going to the gym for 4 months and had lost a total of 1 pound! I couldn't believe it. I thought for sure I'd have put on more muscle and lost more fat than I did. So, I talked with the nutritionist at the gym and she gave me a calorie formula for weight loss (not for everyday eating, but for a 12 week, targeted weight loss plan) and I've been trying to follow that very strictly for about a month now. I've lost 6 pounds just in the last month that I've been doing this! All I did was change my diet to 50% carbs, 30% protein, and 20% fat. It's difficult to get 30% protein and keep my fat down to 20%, but it's doable. I'm much more aware of the fats that I'm eating now and I can totally see that while I was staying under 2000 calories before (which is what I can have when you consider my weight and workout and breastfeeding) I was eating way too much fat and not enough protein. Protein will help me put on muscle which will help me burn fat more efficiently. So, I'm going to stick to this for the next two months and see where it takes me. I had 20 to lose and I'm well on my way!
Don't be discouraged. It could be a plateau, or it could just be that your body isn't responding to what you're doing and you just need to shake things up a little. Good luck though. I hope you find what works for you!

Thanks Wanda, that's really helpful info. Interestingly, I've been logging my food into fitday.com and I've been realizing that, like you were, I've been eating too much fat and not enough protein, even though I'm not eating a lot of calories. I keep hearing that generally people eat more than enough protein but that's not true in my case, apparently. I'm not much of a meat eater, so that's probably part of it. So that's something I need to work on. I'll try your suggestions.
Six pounds in a month is great! Good for you. Good luck with your program and thanks for the support!
Its a common mistake. A friend of mine works out like a madwoman and cant seem to drop any weight, I tell her all the time she needs to up her protein. Lean Muscle mass needs protein to survive. Feed it!!! Hugs!
Wanda & Carrie, where your calories are coming from can make a HUGE difference!!
