HELP!!!!
| Wed, 06-28-2006 - 12:18pm |
I am a 32 yr old female living in Marietta, GA...I am very over weight and need some help just starting a diet program...My problem is being consistent. I can start and be on a good roll and fall off for a month or two and get back on. This has been going on with me for the past few years. I have spent multiple dollars on all kinds of program and diet food. I am at the point where I have lost all motivation. Is there anyone who can offer some inspiration or help? I have thought about Jenny Craig and weight watcher as a last resort.
All advice is welcome.
Need Help

Nice to meet you!
My biggest suggestions is that don't let one bad day lead to another. So you have a bad day the moment you feel the slightest bit ready to jump back on the wagon just do it. Don't wait till Monday or the next week. Any time is a good time to start fresh. The sooner you get back on track the more damage control can be done.
I did have a friend who tried Nutri System. She bought there food and everything and she lost a good deal of weight fairly quickly. She told me it was all about portion control and helped her put that in perspective. Now she did plateau and had deal with some frustration there.
Maybe start reducing your calorie intake. Start small. If your not into calorie counting try eliminating one thing from your diet at a time. Personally, I started with soda then once I got that out of my system I got rid of the McDonalds french fries and so on.
I'm still struggling to find what will work for me in the exercise department. So I just keep trying. Hoping I'll come across something I like and can stick too. Not sure what your financial situation is and or gym availability but find a way to move more. Take a walk around the block, try different things at the gym, check out different work out videos from the library.
Also, try to change your perspective on the whole thing. It's hard but wrap your brain around that this is something you have to do for yourself. By doing this for yourself you will be benefiting the rest of the people in your life. You'll be more confident, happier, and more comfortable with yourself.
Welcome to the boards! I haven't tried any of the diet programs such as Jenny Craig or WeightWatchers, but have friends who do weightwatchers, and it's just what they needed. In order to keep them motivated and consistent with a program, they needed the weekly weigh in for motivation, and the meetings for support from others (even those that are just 'on-line' members). Through my work, we offer to pay for 50% of the program cost for employees. One of my employees joined, and she looks fantastic - and feels so much better - now that she's been able to stay on an EASY to follow program (she's been doing the points program).
The last post mentioned Nutri-System as one that she's heard of that worked. Why don't you look into a few of them and find out which one might work best for your lifestyle and give it a try? most of them have memberships that aren't really long term, so you can try it and see if it's giving you the results you want before signing up for a longer term.
Good luck! Motivation to continue and not get discouraged if you get off track is the KEY!

Hey Missflossy!!!
Losing weight can be a daunting challenge, and one that we easily become discouraged at if we don't see immediate results!
Hi there, and welcome to the board! Gretchen, Tonya and Miranda have given you some great ideas and thoughts to start off with, I really don't have anything new to add, except don't forget to drink up- water that is ;-)
Take one day at a time.....

Hello
I try to drink a lot of water but it is so hard some time. I drink a lot but not as much as I know I should.
Hi
Thanks for the reply. I have thought about some of those places. Not sure if I am ready to join them yet. I have never thought about eliminating something. I am going to try doing that and see how that works for me. Not a problem with the long wind, I am here to listen.
Thanks again
Welcome!
I was just like you, and I changed that when I was around your age.
I would do great for short periods, but once I stopped it was so hard to start again.
What I had to do was realize that this is NOT temporary - it MUST be a permanent lifestyle change.
You mentioned you weren't sure about signing up for one of the diet programs yet. I think this board is great for motivation as the group here keep me inspired! If you want to just try it on your own, I think the most important thing is being honest with yourself about what and how much you're eating. If you take the time to write down everything you eat, that by itself can be a great diet plan (who wants to write down "ate a bag of cookies"). It makes you think twice about what you're going to eat if you realize you'll have to re-live it later by writing it down. Also, exercise, even if it's just a fast walk around the block to start out will help you realize how much better you feel after getting your heart rate going. If you just force yourself to take a fast 10 minute walk, you'll find you really have more energy when you're done. You CAN do this without giving up everything you love. Just remember that moderation is the key. You can still have a cookie, or ice cream, etc if you're craving it, just have 1 cookie, or 1/2 cup ice cream. As long as you see it as a 'diet' in which you can't have certain foods, you'll resent it and just end up giving into cravings for those things that are 'no-no's. Instead think of it as making better choices, and still having treats when you really want them, but in smaller portions.
YOU CAN DO IT!
