M-in-Law sabotaging diet!!! HELP!!

I am going to our family reunion in Arkansas this weekend. We are "silently obligated" to stay with my mother in law, besides, the closest hotel is 72 miles from them! My mother in law cooks all high fat food (her cholesterol was 725!). She has sugary foods and it is VERY hard to find anything healthy in her cabinets. She gets really annoyed if I suggest to help with the cooking because she is from the country (backwoods) and I tend to use less fat! A typical breakfast is bacon, smothered fried potatoes, biscuits and gravy (flour and vegetable oil), dinner is wilted lettuce (hot vegetable oil heated and poured over lettuce), fried potatoes, greens (drizzled with oil), fried green tomatoes and hambegars. How can I survive the weekend on her unhealthy diet without hurting her feelings or my diet? Her cooking could really sabotage my diet! Yikes! Hhhhhheeeeeeeelllllllpppppp!
(My DH is VERY supportive of my diet efforts and KNOWS that his mother's cooking is unhealthy)

That's a tough situation to be in, especially when someone equates cooking for family with caring for them.

I know you said the closest hotel is quite a distance, but are there any restaurants in the area? You could take them to dinner.

WoW-- that is some deadly sounding food!!

Couple of questions:

How long are you going to be staying with her?
Will you have meals out too?
Do you at least like the foods she serves?

If you're going to be there a couple of days I'd suggest bringing some Lean Cuisine's along, and tell her what's up...that you're watching your diet, etc...
If you will be going out at least you can order what *you* want/need!
If you enjoy the food then enjoy it; in moderation.

Good Luck Dawn......you're right, it does sound like a delicate situation-- glad to hear your DH is on your side though.

Uuugh! Mother-in-laws! lol

I agree with everyone else. Bring some stash along that might help curb your hunger so you can at least do smaller portions if possible is my suggestion.

Also, not sure if she gets hurt feelings easy but you might just have to say. I'm sorry don't mean to hurt your feelings but I can't eat this. And eat

Thank you ladies for the help! I snuck on her (MIL's) computer Saturday and read some suggestions! I did ask for chicken when she was frying hambegars and potatoes and she seemed to be ok with it. I also took some fruit cups and ate those at breakfast with some of her scrambled eggs (which 4 hours after the 3 month old eggs were injested and 45 minutes in the worse pain in the bathroom, I was thoroughly convinced she was trying to kill me...lol) The rest of the family thought that I was the wierd one, but DH was SO supportive and by the end of the weekend, my sister-I-L was alsos going to start a diet. I kind of felt like a diet evangelist! :) I was able to make it thru the weekend because of you ladies AND I lost 2.5 pounds! (the old eggs may have contributed to the weight loss!)
I enjoy this board and all of you...thanks again! Dawn

Congratulations on the loss!!
