Anyone doing Pilates?

Does anyone here do Pilates regularly, and if so, how do you feel about it? What are the benefits, and what results have you seen? How long did it take before you saw/felt results?

I did Pilates off and on a couple of years ago and I still do it occasionally but I have never stuck with it continuously enough to see results, I think. My main forms of exercise now are yoga and walking, and I love both, but I'm wondering if Pilates will help me gain a more toned look.

Thanks Miranda! That's all good to know. I'm particularly interested in the "core strength" you mentioned that pilates is supposed to help with. And I also like that you found it to be a good all-over workout. I think I'm going to mix it in with my yoga and see what happens.

Hey Carrie, this is the DVD I have, which is easy, quick (only 20 min) and I found to have good instruction:

I remember Pilates. Actually, I still do it about once a week, but I have Hap Ki Do three times a week and I get out to jog/walk when I can, and DH has been teaching me to play tennis this summer too, so I don't do it as much as I used to.

I really enjoy it. It's a good workout, especially when the jogging and martial arts have taken too much of a tole on my legs and joints. I still get a good workout with Pilates, but there's not the pounding like with running or the stress on the joints.

The benefits I noticed from it, and the reason I always keep it in the rotation, were most visible in my abs and in my hips. It really did give me some definition in my abs, especially upper abs. I never thought I'd actually be able to see definition there. It also really helps tone the hips. I feel those exercises when I do them, the sidekick series and the standing work I've done too. If one is consistent with it, which I haven't been lately, some of the leg lifts can really get that inner thigh area too.

I have the Windsor Pilates set, the three that came together from the TV thing. I actually ordered from a TV infomercial, but I really wanted to try it after I had used one I bought with a friend, it was a brief (about 20 minutes) introductory video from Stott Pilates. The DVD I learned the standing leg exercises from is one I borrowed from our library called Pilates for Every Body.

That's my experience on Pilates, in great detail, LOL.

Thanks for your thoughts ... very interesting! Instant results sure sounds good! That's what I want ... to feel everything tighten up!

Thanks for all the info ... it's good to know you find it to be a good workout. Abs! That is what I need to work on most. Although I love my yoga, I'm not seeing any difference there (although the yoga seems to create more definition in my arms and legs).

I have the Winsor Pilates set of three also ... I've actually had it for a few months and never used it. Two nights ago I broke it open and did the 50-minute fat-burning thing (it's almost like aerobics with pilates moves thrown in) ... it was fun at first

That's interesting. I have experimented with yoga, on DVDs by GAIAM LivingArts, and I have found it surprisingly challenging
