new - want to lose weight - how?

Hi! Been trying to lose weight for sometime, came across this board and thought Id check in for some ideas.

I am a married full time working mom of 2 girls- almost 12 and 3. My disabled father also lives with us. My big thing about wanting to lose weight is not having to put my kids through what Ive gone and am going through with my fathers health. He is diabetic, it runs in the family. I was always trim until I had my kids and have slowly and steadily put on the pounds- about 70 lbs since Ive been married (13 yrs). I have done Weight Watchers, but didnt really like to weigh in in front of people, and didnt really feel any connection to the local WW here. I do try to work out- everytime I get into a routine it seems my dad gets sick and Im back at hospitals with him for months on end.

My main problems are that I get bored real easy with all the "diets" and stuff out there, and I feel like I dont have "me" time. Im working, or running a kid here or there, or taking my dad to dr appts, cooking dinner, cleaning house etc. By the time I get home in evening, I only have about 4 hrs before bed- thats including the time I need to cook, take care of kid stuff, dad stuff etc. My husband also wants to lose weight- so we have been trying to look for something to do together, that doesnt require alot of time away from the kids. We do go for walks in the evening with the dog and kids, but usually not too far before the kids start whining!. I also have IBS, so when I try to eay healthier- more fruits and veggies- I get very sick and bloated.

Anyone have any suggestions for me? Boy- if I reread what I just wrote, it sounds like I have an excuse for everything! But I really am open to suggestions. Thanks ahead of time.

Theresa

Hi and welcome! Gosh, I can see that you wouldn't have a lot of me time with all you've got going on. For me, when I don't take "me time" -- even if it's only twenty minutes a day -- I overeat more. It's like my way of saying, fine, if I don't get time for myself, I'll take care of myself by eating! Of course this backfires.

Is there any way you can get out on your own to take a short walk, without the kids?

Are there any responsibilities you can afford to let slide a little -- like cleaning house? Can you afford to have someone come in to give the house a thorough cleaning every so often, even just once a month? Any way you can give yourself more time to yourself, where you aren't taking care of everyone else, I think will have a very powerful effect on your state of mind and well-being.

I know what you mean about the fruits and vegetables ... when I started adding lots of them to my diet, I felt a little sick too ... my system was so used to processed foods, I think (yuck!). I tried adding one new fruit and vegetable per week, and I could handle it better. Now I eat them every day and it's no problem.

Thanks!

I can let things slide a little- I get paid by a home health service for taking care of my dad so they pop in and make sure everything is clean, and nothing to trip over, etc. Usually I have warning of when they are coming though.
I was doing really good at walking at least 2 miles a day on my treadmill- I have it set up in my room in front of tv- so lots of times the kids would come in and we would all watch something together, or just catch up on the day together. But now that dad is back in hospital (since 7/1) I am running back and forth there and not having so much extra time- plus family visiting to see him and then I have to cook and keep extra room clean for them! AGH!

My big concern though is my health and that I need to take better care of myself. I dont consider myself fat- but when I look in mirror it is definatley someone else there (not the image of what I feel I look like.) I would love to lose about 50 lbs, but know I need to start with smaller goals- cuz 50 just like too much of an obstacle. I am really concerned about the diabetes, high cholesterol and heart problems that run in my family- so would really like to get a curb on this now, before problems do arise. I know what I need to do and want to do it- just cant seem to make myself stay on track, when I have all this responsibility and have a few minutes to myself, I just want to relax.

After readinng several other posts here, it feels like you guys are very supportive of each other and urge each other to keep going. I think thats more what I need- the push from others to do it!

Hello and welcome. I'm Lorie, 33, recently married, no kids of my own. DH is a bit older than am I; he has a DD, 20 years old, and a DS, soon to be 22. DD is living in an apartment about 15-20 minutes away from where we live, where she attends college and works. DS works, but is still living in DH, and now my, house. His sister said that he and his GF are engaged and plan to marry by next summer; we shall see since neither of them are good at saving money. In any case, raising kids is not an issue for us, but both DH and I work full time.

You certainly
