That is not a cop out! Sometimes we have to be realistic. Part of me realize my weight is probably closer to be right for my age than I'd like to admit, however, still would like to look better.
I think right now setting the goal not to gain any more is great. Just keep doing what you realistic can do. I think 1400 to 1600 should be just fine calorie wise. Make sure your still getting your exercise in.
According to fit day I typically burn more calories than I eat but doesn't seem to stop me from maintaining and/or gaining.
You sometimes have to throw away what the "rules" are telling you and really start finding
I hear you and I really empathize. My goal was to lose a measly 3 pounds by the end of the summer and I haven't even done that! I seem to be at a never-ending plateau and I'm wondering if maybe this is it, and I'll just stay 10-15 pounds above my "goal weight." Anyway, I agree with Gretchen that it is not a cop-out to have not gaining weight as your goal. I think the more do-able the goal is, the more positive we feel, because we don't constantly feel we're falling short.
Also, I think we shouldn't rely too much on the BMI because it doesn't take muscle vs. fat into account. I think I have more muscle now than I did 10 years ago, but my BMI is higher. I weigh more than I did then, but I think I'm stronger and more fit. I think we shouldn't live or die by the scale or the BMI!
Hi Ann, a few weeks ago I had found an article that addresses exactly this issue, here's the link:

HI Ann
I feel for you with losing weight. It is not an easy thing to do for some of us. You should pat yourself on the back for making a good effort though!!!! I was 175 lbs. after my daughter was born. It has taken a long time to take the weight off. My daughter is now 7!!!! I am now 135 lbs. for the last 3 years! I didn't use Weight Watchers, Nutri System, Jenny Craig, NONE of that stuff. I am not knocking them down but I figured it was up to me to lose the weight. I read alot on the internet. I follow a diabetic menu daily (complex carbs)and the weight came off slowly. You won't see dramatic results right away. I walk 3 miles a day, 3 days a week at least 3.0 mph to 3.5 mph. I use dumbbells for my arms and back every day. 2 to 3 days a week I do pilates. The dvd I have has a 20 min and a 15 min segment incase I can't do the whole thing. I power walk through the grocery store. I park the fartherest distance in the parking lot so I can get my walking in too.
I am not telling to do all this at once. Just try to set 2 or 3 days a week for you exercise program and work up. I hope it helps.
Ann, I don't think that's a cop out at all. If you're issue right now is with putting weight on I think breaking things down to start 'maintaining' is a great idea. Work from there, as we like to say- baby steps!
Good Luck ♣
I'm actually going to sit down and figure my next goal this morning too.
