Today I took my kids out clothes shopping and they wanted to stop and get a treat at the bakery. They were being pretty good so I figured it would be a nice treat for them. On the way in I told myself that I wasn't going to get anything. Instead I was going to wait until I got home to eat a more healthy alternative. Well, while we were waiting to order, my self control went right out the window. I ordered a sticky bun! I seem to have a hard time while I'm out with other people. Does anyone have words of advice? What has worked for you?

What we do with our kids is really try and incorporate a healthy life style into their lives as well. Since Dh and I are both on a fitness kick, losing wait and getting healthy.

Hey! Not a bad idea to SHARE the treat. I too have incorporated a healthier life style with my kids. Not too easy when you have 16 and 17 year old boys but not impossible either. My DDs on the other hand (10 and 12) are much easier to convince. They would have gone for the "sharing" idea. Thank you so much for the tip!

I guess I shouldn't hold out hope for my 8 year old son then huh?

It does get harder after they become teenagers because they want to eat EVERYTHING. It's hard to keep an eye on what they are eating when out with friends, etc. They have just come to the understanding that when they are at home they don't have a whole lot of choices in the junk food category. Sure I get some complaints now and then but thank goodness they both LOVE fruit. So, I keep a lot of fruit on hand at all times for when they want to snack. The other thing they love is ice cream. I've gotten to where I will buy ice cream 1 day a week and maybe bake some "health concious" cookies now and then. They also like Wheat Thins so I usually allow them to snack on those when they want instead of chips. I'm just hoping that I'm not doing more damage than good and they feel like they need to pig out on the junk food while they are out since there aren't those foods available at home. It does seem to be easier with my DDs though. All of my children are thin so it's not a matter of obesity but more a healthier lifestyle like you said.

Don't beat yourself up about it. Consider it a small cheat and go back to your healthy ways afterwards. Use it as motivation to punch out those last 30 situps or run that last quarter mile. If your kiddos are old enough, next time give them the money for what they want and wait outside, then have them wiat for you while you hit, say, the frozen yogurt stand. Or just say no and ake them someplace healthier. :)

I agree with Darcy - sharing would be a great alternative.

My daughter was born allergic to apples so growing up we could never do any of the infant/toddler juices (most are mixed with apple concentrate)- so they drank milk strictly until they were 3. At 3, thank goodness, the allergy went away and they got their 1st sip of fruit punch at daycare. I think because they didn't "grow up" on juice they don't really have a taste for it. To this day, my 6 year old son still orders milk with his Happy Meals and restaurants and my daughter does orange juice.

Our "special treat" for them are the fruit snacks. We don't do a lot of candy at all. One piece per night after Halloween and Easter and then the supply somehow "disappears" lol

I hear you on the self-control though. Mine has been in hiding and I'm trying to find it ;-) Just remember, when you slip, don't beat yourself up too much and move on with healthier choices...
