Suggestions for targeting stomach

I'm looking for tips and suggestions to achieve a flatter stomach. This is not something new for me, I am just at the point where I'm ready to do something about it.

I have a thin frame (5' 4") and have been Blessed with good genes. However, ever since I started puberty, I've always had a "pouch". I have never had a flat stomach and can't figure out how celebrities, fitness experts and musicians do.

Does anyone know if sugar can be related to heaviness around the middle? I've seen articles about women who have an apple shape are at higher risk for diabetes, heart disease and strokes. My mom has Type 2 diabetes and this is a concern for me.

Is anyone working with a nutritionist? How do I find one?

Thanks,
Susan

(seeking her shapelyness again)

From what I have learned working away the fat around the middle is a very challenging task.

Well......Darcy has made some great points. I totally agree, doing only sit-ups etc.....are not the answer. Some of that underlying fat has to go too-- how? Cardio baby! Get that heart heart a pumping, and work on specific ab work too. I think it's an area

Hey Susan, as a pear, I don't have a lot of suggestions for working your middle, although general core work can help improve posture and underlying muscle structure which always helps you look better!

As my mom used to say, "honey, women are SUPPOSED to have stomachs." I know personally how annoying that little pooch can be, especially when you're eating right and exercising and basically happy with the rest of your body! But let me just share this: I have been so much happier since I came to accept my little pooch. I think that some of us--most of us, in fact--are SUPPOSED to have bit of a tummy. The only time I have ever had a "perfectly" flat stomach is when I was running a lot and not eating enough and carrying about 15 lbs too few on my 5'4" frame. I was happy with my stomach but very unhappy with my flat chest, unshapely flat butt, and how weak I felt!

Sure, you could probably do more cardiovascular exercise and starve yourself and have that perfectly flat stomach, but why?

Embrace the pooch!

Most definitely. Have you tried the South Beach Diet, I know when I did that my stomach shrunk considerably.

Also try reading the book, getting rid of your mummy tummy. Although I am not a mother, sometimes we get mommy's tummy's from improperly doing situps.

Smile,

Deirdre

I've tried to embrace it IG but I don't love it and neither does my DH. I always look like I'm 4 months pregnant. YIKES DD is almost 11!!! And now I'm getting a not so lovely "tire" around the middle. I know I can change this because I know want to I just don't know what to do to change it. *sigh*

Have you tried pilates? That has done more for my tummy than anything else I've done...and I've tried just about everything!

The celebs running around in crop shirts and low rise jeans are the ones with lucky genes and highly paid personal trainers.
Everyone has places the fat goes first and leaves last. Mine is my tummy too. My best friend, it's her butt.
The best solution I've found is to lose fat overall... diet and cardio. AND work those muscles too. If we don't use it we lose it. And that leaves us looking saggy and soft even at a good weight.
I know the drill and it is hard. I've had 5 kids and every one has taken me longer to get going on getting back into shape. My "baby" is 5 yrs and I'm just getting around to it. Motivation is my biggest problem. That's why I'm here.

Welcome to the board jjeand, jddancingqueen, and dcmelissa!!

Pooches can be tough to love, and sometimes tougher to get rid of, but whoever it was that was mentioning "embracing the pooch" made a good comment - sometimes we have these unrealistic expectations about what our stomachs should look like.
