Weigh ins? How often?

I am finding that I cannot go to the gym without weighing myself. I love to see it go down and am fearful that it will rise, etc. I also don't care if I am on my period or not - still gotta hop on that scale. Ironic seeing as I used to have a fear of the scale - I weigh myself to avoid getting that fear again. It's also handy for motivation.

So two questions, how often should one weigh themselves and does anyone know how much weight women typically gain during their periods?

I've heard many opinions on how often you SHOULD weigh in.

I'm with JJ - I weigh myself every morning out of curiosity but only record the Monday morning weigh-in as my "weigh-in weight" for purposes of keeping track (ie. my Weight Watchers plan).

I fluctuate a lot too during the week depending on what I ate, what I drank, etc...

It's interesting for me sometimes I'm obsessed with the scale, and I've realized that it's usually around TOM time.....I try to not do it every day, and I do have a 'weigh-in' day (Monday), but I usually step on about 2-3 times a week. Just to keep myself in check really ;-)

Here's an article on measuring beyond the scale: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/motivation_articles.asp?id=104

I haven't weighed myself on a regular basis for a while. I use to before I had children, keep track of my weight everyday. I use to always weigh myself in the morning. I will definitely get back to it. Thanks for the reminder. It's nice to know their are others who weigh themselves everyday. It seems like if you tell people, all of a sudden you are labeled as obsessed.

Interesting article, although I tried his non scale approach, and gained weight. I think going by the scale is important, so I shall disagree with the author, because people and even you will lie about your body proportions. I have a supervisor who will say hey you are looking great you are really coming along, when I had not dropped a pd in months! Clothes can stretch and sizes can change depending on the style. Granted its true they will get bigger as you get smaller; I tend to go by the fresh out of the dryer test. Lastly, being stronger and being able to run longer is good, however being cardio fit is different than being thinner sometimes. I know for a fact I am in far better shape than some women and men who are smaller than me. My bf is good, he rarely comments and if I ask if I am fat he says what does your bmi say? I don't ask him cuz he is a man of science and its all down to numbers. And no he does not think I am fat, just wants me to be healthy.

I am so glad people replied, and like you its nice to know I am not alone in my scale visits. When I was younger, I was given a scale as a birthday present (and yes it was what I asked for). I hope that I don't get that hooked, especially since my next fear is that the lovely and scientific scale as the gym will be wrong and in the wrong direction.

I don't do weigh ins that often because my weight hasn't budged in months yet I lost 2 sizes already from size 8 to 6. I'm of a medium build so I don't think I'll ever get down to 110 lbs as I'd like to. But when I do at the gym the best time to do it is in the morning before you eat any food or drink certain amounts of liquids.

There's a lot to day about being healthy and fit as opposed to 'skinny'......so don't you think the scales goes against this belief? (Please don't take me the wrong way here, I hear your points about getting on the scale- I do the same, it helps keep me on track)....but if we do believe in fitness over weight-- then why the weigh every day mentality? (Just opening up the conversation on this...not specifically directed at you)
