Aching Hip after Walking?
| Sun, 12-31-2006 - 5:33am |
Has anyone experienced an aching hip after walking for long periods of time. I have looked it up on the web and some sites say it is just an imflamation of the muscle whilst other mention bursistis. I am on only 32 (33 in two weeks) and would hate to think that my body is already falling apart! One of the sites said that weight loss would help, but was perplexed that 15pds could do this much damage. It was also commented that the damage was done with the aid of the extra 20pds.
Anyone have any words of wisdom to bestow upon me?
Regards Monet

I get it.
I was also thinking of shoes in terms of this issue ... did you switch shoes recently? Sometimes if I switch walking shoes, even if they are comfortable ones, I experience aches in my back, hips, or legs. I don't think it has to do with weight gain since I experienced it when I was 20 pounds thinner than I am now. Also if I walk a long way and am carrying a bag on one side that's a bit heavy, sometimes I'll have aching on one side of my body.
Hey Monet...I don't want to scare you or anything, but I'd see a doctor about that just to be on the safe side. I've heard about runners who've had the same issue and don't realize they've been running on hairline fractures.
On the other hand, I had the same problem with my right foot's heel and saw a podiatrist to make sure I hadn't fractured anything...I hadn't, but I did have to switch to better shoes (so that could solve your problem, too.) But I'd still see someone just to be safe.

It's probably a wise idea to get it checked out, and hopefully the solution will be as simple as getting new shoes.....keep us updated!

Hi Monetsf! I actually have chronic bursitis in my hip, and walking or other activities can aggravate it, but I do find that if I am doing a regular stretching routine, it alleviates a lot of the problem, as I have general tightness in my hamstrings and IT band that pull that leg out of line putting additional stress on that hip. I did go to physio and it seemed to temporarily help, but I wasn't doing my exercises like I should and now it's come back.
Check with the doc, and see what they recommend!
