Well..... bagels may sound good. But think of how tired and gross and full and sleepy they make you feel. Let everyone else at your office scarf them down. Don't think of it as depriving yourself, just think of it as one of those necessary obligations (like taxes). Act as if you have not other option besides NOT eating the bagel. Sometimes it's easier to have willpower when you pretend like someone is forcing you into something and you have no choice. So, like taxes----- you dont want to do them, (or pay them), but you just do it. Don't eat the bagel because it's NOT even an option.
Another thing to think about...... next time you have a weakness and you go on a non-diet eating spree of french fries, bagels or whatever it is..... write down how disgusting you feel with yourself both emotionally and physically. Write yourself a note TO yourself about what you wish you could've known 15 minutes before you took that first nasty bite (basically about how NOT worth the calories/fat/pounds it was).
Another option, next time you go to something (like a wedding, or dinner, or a party) and you feel hot and good because you followed your diet and you're on top of the world, ALSO write yourself a note. Write this note in the sense of saying "SEE how worth it is was not to pig out?---- SO worth this feeling of looking good".
Finally, if you are married/have a boyfried, think of how disgusted you would be with yourself if you caught him cheating with a girl half your size (or leaving you for a girl half your size). Think of all the regrets you would have wishing you had looked just as good for him (because you CAN). And if you hate your husband/boyfriend, think of the hot/rich guy you can snag if you're skinny so you can ditch you loser husband/boyfriend. This last way of thinking always scares me enough into leaving the bagel on the table.
The end.
Take it from someone whose been in your shoes. I have been up and down the scale as much as anyone. I worked in an office where everyday there were temptations, and yes even the Panera Bagels. What you have to keep in mind is you can't deny yourself constantly and take everything in moderation. I would allow myself 1/2 a bagel with lite or no cream cheese to satisfy myself, even on occasion a whole bagel but then would know later I would have to forgo an evening treat or work out another 30 mins to pay for my "sins". Dont be so hard on yourself and allow yourself a treat now and then.... It keeps you in a better frame of mind! A Happy dieter is a successful dieter!
Good luck in your endeavor

I had to come out of hiding to post. I haven't been to ivillage in quite some time, since I had my daughter who is not 3. Anyways- I think you are getting some responses from people who don't realize how heavenly a Panera Bagel can be. Especially the cinnamon ones. yummmmmmmmy. But I will be in agreement with the ones who said, have just half or a quarter - if you can. Its a nice treat once in a while, rather than depriving yourself. I had already had breakfast this morning and a woman at work brought in homemade cinnamon scones. They were small- but I took one anyways.. brought it back to my desk, took one bite and threw the rest away. They were really good, but I just wanted a taste. Its not going to throw off my entire day.
So don't give up something so tasty - as long as you know you wouldn't do it every day!
Oh I totally agree.
I think I can safely say we are advocates of MODERATION not DEPRIVATION, LOL. The ladies have made some great points!
And a warm welcome to Wallstreetchic, Christine, and Leemark!! Welcome to the board ladies!
HI Caraca!
I graduated from OU in 2001 with a BS in MIS.
Well, I did eat the bagel but I eased up on lunch with a small piece of chicken and romaine lettuce.
