Find out if mindless eating is putting a dent in your diet...

Watching your weight can be daunting. Sometimes you shovel food into your mouth all day long without feeling full. Other days, three small meals are enough to keep you satisfied. Why are our appetites so inconsistent? "No matter how carefully you try to keep your diet in check, you eat how much you eat largely because of what's around you," says Brian Wansink, PhD, in his book Mindless Eating. "We overeat not because of hunger but because of family and friends, packages and plates, names and numbers, labels and lights, colors and candles, shapes and smells, distractions and distances, cupboards and containers." Take this quiz to find out how much food you might be mindlessly eating and discover tricks to help you drop the weight painlessly.

My results are ~ (and I kinda have to add to it, that I know I eat on the run way too much. Lunches might be fast food in the office and dinners might be out with a friend... it adds up for me)

Time to shape up.
You're a reasonably mindful eater with room for improvement. Here are some tips to make your environment more fat-loss friendly:

Incorporate pause points into your meals. For example, after you serve yourself a few crackers, reseal and reshelve them. That way, if you crave more, the time it takes to retrieve and open the box a second time will encourage you to pause and really consider whether you want more crackers.

At cocktail parties, build relationships with people, not platters. Avoid appetizers by arriving late, or skip dessert by leaving early.

Place food on a plate before you eat it instead of noshing directly from a package.

Foster control over your diet by creating your own food policies and food trade-offs. Allow yourself to eat only fruit between meals, or make it a rule that you must jog 15 minutes for every cookie you eat.

Interesting quiz. I got the same results as heyhowru posted above, so I won't post them. I also eat on the run too much. I like that this quiz brought up the idea of "pause points" when you are eating. I think a lot of my eating (snacking particularly) is kind of mindless and before I know it I've eaten more than I meant to.

I disagree with the suggestion of "make it a rule that you must

Ummm, I got different results, so I'll post (blushingly)

Loosen your belt a couple of notches.

Holy cannoli. Sounds like you're eating much more than you think you are. Before you're in need of a new, larger wardrobe, try changing your eating habits. Here are some tips:

  • Serve yourself 20 percent less food. Studies show you won't notice the difference.

  • Make seconds hard to obtain. Immediately stick leftovers in the fridge, or if you're eating out, bring only enough money for a small meal.

  • Stick with one or two food items at one meal, preferably lean protein or steamed veggies.

  • While you eat, focus on your food rather than on a book, a magazine or the TV.

  • Use smaller plates and taller glasses.

  • Strive to keep your home a junk-food-free zone. If your roommate has an addiction to Ding Dongs, ask her to kindly keep her stash out of your sight.
