Diet Pills

Has anyone out there ever been prescribed diet pills? If so, would you share your experience? My doctor gave me a 30 day prescription to "jump start" my weight loss. I'm not sure exactly what kind of results to expect. She did tell me that the Relacore I was taking wasn't going to attack the areas where I had gained weight. I am a little concerned about taking these ie. how I'll feel, will they work, will they keep me wired, etc.

TIA

Susan

NEVER take any medication if you don't know what to expect. Talk to your doc, talk to your pharmasist, but find out what it should do, and what it might do BEFORE taking any.

Unless your weight is causing major health concerns I would be very wary of taking medications. Historicaly, diet meds, both prescription and non, have had awful track records for causing more harm than they fix.

Hi Susan.

Yes, I have taken prescription diet pills, but not Relacore. I don't know how different they would be.

I agree that you should ask as many questions as you can possibly think of. And I'm not sure if it would be possible, but my suggestion would be to take half the dosage in the first few days to get used to the effects. Because, yes most diet pills are going to 'wire' you up a bit. The ones that I took (phentarmine) wired me a bit if I took a whole dose.

My advice would be...that if you're going to go through with taking them ~ plan to take ONLY that 30 day round, and maybe even stretch 30 days worth out to 45 days. And taking them, make changes that will way outlast the taking of the pills. They are a crutch...and while they will jump start your weight loss, they won't last.

Thanks for the replies. I did get my questions answered but as with any medication they have to tell you ALL the possible side effects which may or may not effect you. Phentermine is what the doctor prescribed. I had already planned on stretching them out 45 or even 60 days. Today I definately feel more 'energetic'. I definately got a lot more house cleaning done and had almost no soda. Woo-hoo

I'm not relying on these to totally 'fix' my problem areas but I wanted to try them before investigating surgical procedures which she said I would need to get the results I want.

Thanks,
Susan

Susan-- I'm surprised that a doc would prescribe diet pills, but none the less they are coming from a doc- so the safety of them is a lot better than just picking something up yourself!

I've never taken any diet pills, but wish you the best- don't get too dependent on them!

Good Luck~

I agree with what the others have said about making sure that all your questions are answered.

I think the big one would be to clarify what exactly the prescription is meant to do. Some prescribed medication is primarily to block the absorption of fat, or other nutrients and is prescribed because your body may be less efficient at that task. Other's are appetite suppressents which usually means that they are a stimulant type medication. These are the one's the generally have gotten a bad rap because of the stimulant effects, and they CAN cause dependencies, irregular heart rhythms, and nervousness or sleep problems. Other medications may be part diuretic to flush your system and may be prescribed if your body retains more than the usual amount of fluids.

I think that the pharmacist may be able to answer these questions. Also remember that if it is a stimulant type medication that some people are far more sensitive to stimulants than others, so Steffy's suggestion of starting off slowly would be a good idea. And IG's comment re: dependency is a good one to be wary of as well.

Hopefully your prescription works for you, and keep us posted on how you feel, and what you find out!
