Is Atkins really the Answer?

Some of you may have heard or read the results of a study that is now published in the Journal of the American Medical Association:

Comparison of the Atkins, Ornish, Weight Watchers, and Zone Diets for Weight Loss and Heart Disease Risk Reduction

http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/293/1/43

The results seem to indicate that out of the four diets examined over the course of a year, participants in the study lost the most weight with the Atkins plan, with little or no adverse medical effects.

Would a study like this or the publications of medical studies affect the way you approach diet and fitness?

Have you ever tried any of the diets mentioned above?

How likely are you to research any diet plan that you follow?

First off let me start by staying although they all look like plans that might work, and I do know that some of them do, I for one could not be restricted like that ;-)

~nope....see my opinion above

....this is going to be a boring answer (LOL) ~nope

IF I was to do any of them I would find books and articles (online) and see what others thought who'd done it or are doing it.

Would a study like this or the publications of medical studies affect the way you approach diet and fitness? No - not me personally - I always try to stick what sounds like common sense, healthy approaches

Have you ever tried any of the diets mentioned above? I have done Weight Watchers and REALLY liked it - I just didn't have the self-discipline to be successful on it. My sister has done Atkins and lost about 50 pounds, but of course, put it back on after she stopped. Now she is doing it again to jump-start herself AND doing WATP dvd's too

How likely are you to research any diet plan that you follow? Not too likely - I usually go by word of mouth based on the weight loss I see on someone else...

Sometimes, if the study shows something that I kind of already thought made sense. Generally, they seem to change their opinion so often in terms of what they deem is healthy for you, that it doesn't seem worth it! LOL

Nope. I think if I lived on my own I'd be much more likely to try to follow a stricter regimen, but when you have to cook for others it makes it a little more difficult.

I do like to look info up on the internet, but honestly I'm much more likely to check out others opinions rather than scientific proof. Although there have been a few diet/fitness related fads that I have done research on to see if there were any negative health impacts (mostly supplements, foods).

I agree with what most of you have said - MODERATION is really the key!
