Just ate, still hungry

I sometimes still feel hungry after I ate, even though I ate exactly what I thought sounded good! For lunch, I had a spinach salad with salmon, almonds, and vinagrette dressing. It was pretty good sized, but I don't feel satisfied. Should I wait - is it still just my old habit of going to something sweet for dessert? Go for some fiber? I think I've been an overeater for sooooooooo long it's hard for me to discern true hunger unless my stomach is actually growling. Any input is appreciated - thanks! :)

You didn't eat any grains. Your body needs protein, carbohydrates and fat (the macronutrients) to survive.

With any salad, I add a healthy, whole grain to the side -- like a whole wheat roll or quinoa (protein-rich whole grain).

The "whole grain" part is important. Look on the label for the first ingredient - it should say something like "whole wheat" or "whole oat." In a whole grain, the nutrients and fiber have not been stripped in the refining process. Fiber helps you stay full longer, aids in digestion, and can even help with weight loss. You should aim for about 25 grams of fiber per day.

There's a lot more I could say here, but that's my guess as to why you're hungry.

I agree add something else to your salad like having a whole wheat roll, good idea. Some cheese and whole wheat crackers maybe, cup of soup.

Also, I've always heard if you still feel hungry after a meal wait 20 minutes and see if the hunger passes. Don't mistake not feeling "FULL" with hungry. No what I mean??

Hi Rebecca, I agreee with tallgirl & Gretchen. Try adding some grain to go with your salad. Then I would say if you think that perhaps it is more habit of having something sweet after a meal, then try having a cup of herbal tea after meals and seeing if that fills the gap!

Ya know, I never got into the Atkins diet, but because there was so much hype about it when it was popular, I think I unconsciencly (sp?) avoid grains, even though I know better. I will try the advice about adding some whole grains - thanks! :)
