Good bye to coffee, now what?

I loooooove my morning cup of coffee, and I put in a ton of flavored creamer. I've known for awhile that this is a bad, but kept dismissing it as 'just an early morning indulgence - have all day to work it off'. Well today I actually took the time to look at the amount of calories and saturated fat. Yikes. Time for something new.

I am not ready to give that first blast of caffeine (NOT a morning person, but have kids who are going 110 mph when I get up), and I also want something hot in the morning. I don't care for tea at all. I know I'm not making it easy, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Rebecca - I haven't given up my morning cup of coffee either so I use 1% milk and 2 Equals in mine. When I go to Starbucks I get the skim

I agree, no reason at all to give up your coffee.

Oh Rebecca, I could never give up my morning espresso. So I feel your pain. LOL Have you ever tried any of the flavored soy milk? I have no idea how it would taste in coffee though.

Or how about this, my son actually loves this and I make it with decaf instant coffee - I take a cup of skim milk and heat it in the microwave and then add a serving of instant coffee and then whip it up using one of those little aerolatte thingamabobs. You end up with an instant cafe au lait type drink! And it's actually kind of good for you because really it's like a glass of skim milk!

Oh Rebecca.....I don't think you should (or have to) give up anything as important as coffee, perhaps the creamers and what not, but not the coffee!!

I used to do those creamers to (love the hazelnut one)- but like you realized I was silly to add it every day. I now only allow myself one cup of 'treated' coffee a week. Usually on a Saturday morning, that way I can also savor the flavor :-)

Miranda's suggestion of what her DS does is good too. I've made it with 2% milk (skimmed is just too watery for me).

Other than a coffee jolt in the morning; I don't know what to suggest! Let us know how it goes, if you give it up.....

lol - my coffee problems. *sigh* If only life were always this uncomplicated! I'll enjoy it while it lasts! :)

Well, I searched at the grocery store for a new creamer. I finally got the fat free french vanilla - :P I don't like it. The stuff I like is all the ultra creamy stuff, and it all has fat! And I use more than the recommended serviving size, so I get a very good serving of fat to start my day! Now I am thinking that maybe I should switch to hot chocolate in the morning, and add in splash of super strong coffee? I crave that warm creaminess in the morning, and could probably wein myself off the caffeine.

Any more suggestions would be great!

Rebecca

How about mixing the full fat creamer with low fat? Would that give you your dose of creaminess?

I know it's not as healthy as 2% or anything, but if it is the creaminess you want/crave- I say have a splash for your coffee.....enjoy it. If you want flavor (ie. vanilla) buy the flavored ground coffee.

No point in being miserable ;-)

I have to say I tried the 'fat-free' kind too, and found it dreadfully 'oily'!

Hello, I am new to this, but I wanted to say that my husband and I are on this calorie counting diet thing, and I don't dare give up my coffee. I use flavored coffee, Folger's Vanilla Biscotti, and Land o Lakes fat free creamer, it's only 20 calories/2 tblsp, it really doesn't taste bad at all.

Good luck, any other helpful tips with counting calories and working out????

Heather
